Had to post this photo that my daughter took yesterday of Layla, a 19 week old splash. Her tail is simply amazing! She’s not the friendliest chick, does not like being picked up or held, also the smallest of the 4 that I have, but her beauty makes up for it I suppose!View attachment 2366803

Wow she has a lot of potential looking this nice at only 19 weeks! Hopefully she'll come around more as she gets closer to laying. I've had a lot of skittish pullets get a lot friendlier once they started laying (doesn't always happen but more often than not).

Nala, my partridge, was not very friendly either, but just started laying last week at 20 weeks and is now cuddly!! So there is hope!

Thanks! We will see! She has been that way since she hatched. Always the last one to catch when I put them outside for the day when they were littles. She actually put up with her pedicure yesterday, but not to happy about having her beak filed with an emory board (none of them like that actually, can't blame them...)

I totally thought the sofa would happen for the longest the shoebox was a fail, it kept Flipping over. So her and Minnie, my D'Uccle, have been laying them on the floor of their sleeping coop. They move all the bedding out of the way first, so it's nice and clean, and lay their eggs right next to the ceramic egg. They both go in together and wait for each other!! They lay within a few minutes of each other too! They are besties.

I just got nesting pads that i am going to put in the new "nesting" area of their coop extension. I have some work to do on their current run before i can do that.

I just put the brooder with the two cochins next to them all, so they can start to get familiar with each other. They are soooo cute. The big girls seemed super excited, but i am not sure if that is mama excitement, or potential food excitement

I got these. Hope the link works. They are big squares. Have a paper backing so hold together quite nicely. So far they stay quite clean as the chickens only use them to nest and they don’t stay in the nest boxes after they’ve done their thing. I have them in my 5 gallon bucket nest boxes photo attached.

I just bought these!! Different brand (but might try yours next). I haven't put them in yet, cuz there really isn't a separate area for them to nest in.. Hopefully they will shift to the new spot. I can work on the coop next weekend, but not this weekend (darn). But the second silkie started squatting, and the second D'uccle has been squatting, so i think i need to hurry up!

How thick are they? Ones I've gotten in the past were kind of thin. I used them as a cushion base under shavings. I'd like some nice thick pads.

Do they need them thick? My girls are new to laying, but they push all of the bedding out of the way (maybe because it is not clean.. they don't have an official nest box yet). But they are done w their business within a few minutes. I wonder if thicker is better when they are broody?? Or do they need it?

I have metal nest boxes I had got them for. They need a little more padding than the few wooden ones I have.

I want to say that between a half and three-quarter inch thick, but then the chickens kind of fluff them up a bit as you can see from the photo. They are 13 x 13“ square. Seem to work nicely so far.
