I am in lockdown and tomorrow is hatch day...

I keep looking for early birds..Nothing yet..
And of coarse my split/lavs cant be candled yet 2 more days

I have 3 bators full of silkies and my lav eggs should be arriving so I am thinking of another bator

I have 3 batches of lav and lav/splits coming so I think it should make for an interesting month...The egg hatch shuffle

I am a newbie to silkies, I have some youngsters, 6 who are about 2.5 months old. their tops are getting full, their eyes are disappearing into that fluff. They are white bearded silkies.

being a newbie with them, watching their behaviors, do all silkies act like they are drunk or confused? Mine walk around with their heads cocked funny, like they are listening to train tracks to hear if a train is coming.
is it because they can't see properly? (obviously)
and when they get their full beards in, how do they really know where they are going etc. does anyone trim around their eyes for them.
how do they enjoy their world around them, when they can't even see it.

so really, do silkies act alot more bizarre then regular chickens, mine seem too.

they are cute, but, wierd. haha.

I just want to know if mine are normal, or if they are lacking something........???

curious to hear about what silkie 'normal' behaviour is like.

You might stumble around and run into things too if you couldn't see....HA! I trim the feathers above their eyes (verrrry carefully) so they can see straight ahead. This doesn't hurt the appearance of a full pouf on top but it makes them a lot more sure footed and better nourished because they can see the food. I had one hen that was not eating until I trimmed around her eyes. She's sooo much happier and eats well now. I highly recommend it. Get a friend to hold them wrapped in a towel so they can't struggle. Then you hold their head while trimming around the eyes. Keep the side of the scissors parallel to their eye, this way you aren't close to their eye with the points if they suddenly struggle out of your control.

I think I might have 2 Silkies. Im a newbie chick farmer and when I first read about Silkies, I wanted one SOOO bad.

This is one that I think is a Silkie. Her or his name is Cutie Pie. Haha When I first got my chicks this one rode home in between these 2 things under my shirt to keep warm. Haha. I had a low shirt on so she could still breath but it was so cute! Ever since that day Ive always called her Cutie Pie. Or him.. Which would be a weird name for a roo but its used to the name already! Lol Please someone tell me if this is a Silkie!

featherbaby, thanks for the trimming instructions. I have a Silkie that is eleven weeks old and is beginning to look like she may need a trim.

here are most of my flock, I have one that is camera shy, and I have one that is molting...

Rasputin, he is right at a year old

Atilla, he is 5 months approx.

Clementine is also around 5-6 months...she was my first chicken, just pet quality but i think she is pretty

Cleopatra is 7 months. She has a twin that is molting

Isabella came from a fellow that I met at P.O.O.P.S.

This is my favorite cockerel, Napoleon...very laid back, around 8-9 months old...
