Silkie thread!

I have a silkie question please!!! I know the standard comb for Silkies is the Walnut comb. I have a white Silky rooster who has a standard very tall comb with just a tiny little walnut at the base of his beak. I will take a pic of him and post it as soon as I can. I have never seen a Silkie with a tall comb. He is my best breeding rooster so I don't want to cull him out but i'm afraid he's going to pass that gene on to his offspring. I want to know if this is a common happening in Silkies? Thanks for any response.

Patti~~it sounds as though you are describing a single comb.....does it stand erect? a pic would be great. If it is a single comb, it's best not to use him in the breeding pen, as he will pass that trait on...sorry

I would eliminate him from the breeding pen. He may be the best breeder because he might be dominant. You'd be shocked how well another might fill his shoes if he were not present. Another thing is, if you get lower fertility with other roos, trim bums.

He will pass on the single comb.

I'm not sure if this is listed somewhere in the 185 pages of this thread, so I will ask anyways. I am going to start a breeding stock for BBS and Partridge Silkies. My question is this: I have a splash roo, how many blue and black roos / hens do I need to have to get a good BBS chick ratio? I have read that breeding splash to splash may dilute the color over time, is this correct? Any info would help. Thanks

Hi Silkie experts! I have a question about a broody Silkie.

I have 7 LF hens of various breeds and one Light Brahma roo. He is a big boy, but a good roo and is nice to his hens. I rescued 3 little silkies from a family who just could not keep them anymore. I put the silkies in with the other chickens about 4 months ago (maybe that was a mistake??) and they all get along beautifully. Now I have my first broody silkie. She is sitting on a clutch of six eggs, all of them silkie eggs. Would my Light Brahma roo mate with a little silkie? I haven't checked any of the Silkie eggs we've collected and eaten for fertility as it didn't really occur to me. I'm just wondering if there's a chance any of the little eggs might actually hatch. She's been hunkered down for a week. I've never had a broody and I've never hatched in an incubator. Do I need to do anything?

I don't have Silkies yet but I can say for sure having had a Brahma roo with some bantams that yes they will bred with bantams. so you might have some silkie/brahma chicks please posts pics so we can see how cute they are..
