Super cute! But there is no way to tell at this age what sex they will be. I have even had 5 months old trick me I think they are hens and the next thing I know they are Crowing.

X1000 no way to know gender at this sage sans DNA testing

Yeah true, I was just taking a guess though. I'll have to wait until they are older! Thanks!

Congrats! Brinsea makes wonderful incubators.

I don't really moniter mine the first 18 days, I watch the air sacs, but I do keep a humidity moniter w/ temp in there. Its usually around 30% or so. For hatching I keep it around 65-70%. Sometimes once the chicks start hatching it will go even higher around 75%, but if I am hatching in a forced air incubator I don't mind it going that high.

30% Chelsea I think mine was preset at 40% the booklet also said for chicken eggs 40% for the first 18 days is that to high for silkie eggs? I have the Brinsea octagon 20 with the turner and humidity pump. Am I doing this wrong they are only in one day.

That is what I keep mine at. Some people have better success with higher humidity or lower humidity. Those humidity ranges are what work best for me.

Thanks for your quick reply I started to panic,

I guess I'll closely watch the air sac and can lower it if they are not shrinking enough. This is my first silkie hatch the eggs are smaller than those from my other large hens.

Quick little update... we decided to hold off on picking up silkies from the backyard gal. She had 5 month old white ones, but when I called her yesterday to ask if they were bearded or not she didn't know what I was talking about. She sounds really sweet, but I'm a little nervous about getting them from her.

On a more positive note, we will be picking up 3 silkies that are 5 weeks old from a woman who has a lot of experience with silkies and other chicken breeds. I feel more confident about getting them from her, and I'm glad we get to have some start out younger. I'm just a little nervous about ending up with boys.

Anyway... I get them tomorrow at 11 a.m. and will post photos of them later. She has bearded white, splash and partridge. I'm so excited!
