Are these kiddos breeding age yet? If you cross the first fellow with the second blue girl you could get a better idea of what color he is.

Colour genetics in silkies is the same as in any other chicken. Due to the nature of silkie feathers, patterns can look different. For example, I really doubt you could tell the difference between regular barring and cuckoo barring. A sharp distinct pattern is just not going to show that way on silkied feathers--it will look smudged.

If you plan to exhibit or sell chicks or eggs, please don't mix your colours without at least having an idea of what you are doing. If you just want pretty backyard candy, that's fine, and it is one way of learning.

In general, most colour genes are autosomal, not sexlinked, so each parent contributes equally. A few: barring, silver/gold and choc, for example, ARE sex-linked, and the son inherits from both parents, daughters in herit only from their father.

For pure colours (as in not breeding experiments), colour can usually be seen at hatching.

ASBC IMO is amazing I've reached out there before for help and I got good advice very quickly. As long as I have silkies you'll find me on their members list

Annddd yep you must love you baby silkie girl a ton to be digging out a big ol' ball of yucky stinky wax, good for you! For future reference I was told by another breeder who's husband is a vet to try Happy Jacks for dogs for ear mites

Joining the ASBC is worth every penny for those that are raising Silkies. The folks on ASBC can answer many of the questions concerning raising this challenging breed. 99.9% of the time the answers are straight forward from experienced breeders. There is no wading through conflicting information to find the answers a breeder is looking for. And if its not there, ask. Someone there probably has the answer.
