Silkie thread!

I got them from Sebrightmom she lives like 5 minutes away from me. I have posted pics of them. My rooster isn't much of a Blue Partridge though he is missing some of his blue in his chest but he will make an awesome pullet producing rooster. I have some cockerels (I think are cockerels) that will fit the bill pretty well.

Hello everyone. I've been on and off on this thread. One of the silkies my daughter picked out in January died today while we were out having family Easter dinner. The silkie has been sick since we picked her up and just couldn't do it anymore. It stinks because I thought she was getting better. We had some antibiotics that were really seeming to clear her up but now she is gone. Her buddy though is now alone and I am not sure what to do yet. They have been having a rough time of it living in the garage away from the healthy chickens but I just couldn't take the chance to infect everyone back there. Her buddy seems pretty healthy and if it gets a good bill of health after the rest of the meds it will end up in the backyard or at a friend's who recently lost all but one silkie. We had built them their own minihouse and everything...ug.
My daughter is staying at her grandma's tonight and doesn't know yet. I'm not sure how she will take it. She knows that the chicken wasn't doing too well so this is no big surprise but when you are six all animals are special.

Just needed to write it out...I know that these things are all part of owning animals but it still isn't fun for a kid's pet to die.
sheesh.

I've got a couple porcelains I've had for a year from AmyJo Piehl. I'm going to be selling them soon,.. too many colors and no porcelain cock/cockerel. They're pretty birds, but I've got blue/splash, black, white, buff and lavenders to contend with in silkies. Plate is full!

It's the time of year to clear out the nice but not necessary birds as the babies grow!

Ditto.... I have those 2 'porcelain' girls that I plan on getting rid of too. I don't do AOV's and these are still here. They will be a year old in either June/July. I was going to get pics of them and they refuse to cooperate because they just went broody.

Maybe a bath and a wire cage will get them on their feet again.

Darn it, wish they would have been available for the swap. I have a porcelain cockerel and two pullets. I would have been interested. I'd love to see pics! I don't know when I'll be heading up that way again, twice in two weeks was enough for a while.

My first silkie eggs are going on lock down today. (shipped eggs) My first silkie pair has laid 3 eggs. I'm keeping them cool hoping my incubator will free up or she'll go broody soon.

I saw this thread and thought maybe someone out there could answer some of my Silkie questions. I am new to the world of Silkies so here are my questions. What do you or can you do about single combs on your bird? Can you breed if out? And if so what does it take to do so? Will a rooster with a walnut comb be dominant and produce chicks with out single combs? What are peoples experiences and feeling?

I am new to the world of Silkies, not chickens but yes these beautiful little hairy, fluffy things called Silkies. I am trying to raise some with the intent of having a chicken my daughter (now 2 years old) can feed and be around. We have giant cochins and I am not at all happy with them around my daughter. Anyway, I have purchased two different sets of eggs this season and hatched with pretty good luck. Eight eggs I got from a local girl and all eight hatched. Ten I got from a seller on eBay and I think 6 or 7 hatched. So I do have a few chicks. I admit I went in to this adventure not knowing much about these birds( I'm a guinea person!) and mainly planning to have these birds as pets but I would also like a nice bird that I can get some more chicks from in the long run. Plus, lets face it, I really love these things!

I would love to hear some experiences, opinions and ideas on this.
