Silkie thread!

Oh that's just camera flash. He's really shiny in his hackles. I don't know why but my camera makes all of my chicken's hackles look brown!

The list from the hatchery just says "assorted silkie bantam"

I think thats a trick of the camera, snowflake is all white
(except a blue spot on each side of her head, kinda where im guessing her ears would be)

Anyway shes my favorite, super friendly and sweet. Im just madly in love with her.(except her name, but at this point i think it has stuck)
I have another silkie that is all black but shes a total spaz and squeeks her head off if you pick her up. I think im gonna have to put some more time in with her.

I love the mohawk look! Im going to try to give my girls a hair cut, they cant see a thing in front of them, only from the side. The old 'side eye' ..... Which is much cuter than the 'stink eye'

The White ones seem to be the "hams" of the bunch. The little Partridge on the far right in both pics, was the one who had the splayed legs. Put a brace on for 3 days, and gave a bit of B-complex vitamins, and she is good as new...better than her new!

Debbi:

what gorgeous children you have!!! So adorable!

I am a newbie. My Silkies are 3.5 weeks old now. I will upload pics soon. 3 are white, 2 partridge, 1 buff, 1 black. The whites ones are the only ones who tend to 'hold their own' with our 7 other standard sized chicks. The black one is hopelessly shy and nervous. I think the partridges will pick up next but buff and black (have not decided on actual names yet) worry me. Hope to post pics today.

Again, Bravo on your gorgeous brood!

Nice videos. Connor is confident and doing a good job of showig off his birds. The bird in the first video is partridge, although I am not convinced that it is female. I cannot really tell from the way he is holding it, but I don't see as much penciling as a partridge female should have.

A couple of things that Connor is a bit incorrect on. The turquoise blue on the side of the head are the earlobes, not muffs. Muffs are in actually a part of the beard, extending up onto the side of the face. Also, both bearded and non-bearded silkie varieties are recognised. Bearded silkies have muffs; non-bearded do not. With the exception of self-blue, all recognised varieties are recognised in both bearded and non-bearded. If exhibiting, he will need to list whether the bird is bearded or non-bearded. Good luck!

Thanks for the corrections! He's learning and has just really focused on Silkies the last month or so. I passed along your comments and he'll be coming to the forum to learn more and post on his own. I doubt these are show birds and suspected that first bird was a partridge but wasn't sure. This are "his babies" so to speak - so he's learning. He wanted blues but we got these to give him hands on experience and get him to earn his blues (will be at Crossroads this year - he's doing jobs here to earn money to buy birds & rabbits). Two months ago he wasn't interested in showing just liked silkies. lol now it's changing. These birds he has may develop to be "just incubators" as he gets good birds and starts breeding. He got a few eggs to hatch and a black chick hatched Friday - unfortunately it died this morning. Appreciate the comments!
A side note - we'll be in AZ this weekend.

Thanks! These are my first Silkies, so I am excited to learn more about them. So far, they are nothing but cute and hysterical to watch! Let's see, 7 Partridge, 2 Whites, 2 Splash, 1 Buff, 1 Black, and 1 Blue here. Hope to see your babies soon.

Just look under their chin and see if they have a beard. It should be pretty obvious at that age. You should be able to see the beard even from day one.
