He is one of those that I would call "special" Poor little guy!

Maybe you can "dub" his comb like they do game birds???

Its time once again to remind everyone to know the breeder you are buying your birds or eggs from. This is NOT in relation to any posts currently being made but the time for shipping is rapidly approaching. You don't want to be laying out large amounts of cash for birds or eggs from supposedly knowledgeable or unscrupulous breeders. And like every thing else out there they do exist.

Two examples come to mind that are very recent. Someone decided to do their homework first and asked about someone selling hatching eggs. Doing a little digging it was found out that this breeder had no clue about what it takes to create a nice Silkie in the color they were advertising. The second example the purchaser got burned. The eggs being purchased were supposedly lavender. The breeder was using the improper color combinations for breeding. The end result is that the purchaser did not end up with lavender but several other non recognized colors.

Don't let excitement over take your common sense. More than once I held a private war with myself about wanting that new offering. Ultimately my common sense won the war and I did the checking necessary to assure me that I was making the right decision to buy or not.

Robin, I have a question.
My flock is NPIP certified.
Is it not the law to only sell NPIP eggs and birds?

I was wondering about the NPIP actually. I've done some research but here in Maine, there is only one guy and he's located 3 hours from where I live. Can anyone point in the direction of some proper NPIP info that I can actually understand? And maybe inform me a little on why and how it's done? Would I have to take my birds to him? Would he come to me? (Maybe I should find that part out myself... LoL)
But I have silkie chicks that I would like to eventually show, maybe next year, so I gotta get some learning done first HeHe

I am not Robin but I can answer...Yes but no...Yes you are suppose to meet the different requirements for your state as well as the states you ship to. That being said, my PO has NEVER asked for paper work...so NO...it can be done without being tested. This problem Robin speaks of is not pertaining to NPIP but more the quality or the PURE lines of what is sold as such.

EACH state has different requirements for showing so you need to go online and look around for your NPIP links. Here in Texas we have a sister program that is the same as NPIP and is done free. Maybe someone there will speak up to what is required for you. It boils down to Polurum Typhoid testing of your flock. Nearly ALL shows require this testing to show.
