I have a question for you awesome guys

I just hatched out several silkie chicks and have half a dozen partridge. The partridge coloring is so different in each chick. What should it look like?

A chipmunk

Great, thanks! Three look like chipmonks and three are just shades of brown and gold and red.

Floridachicken, we're going to try the homemade way for sure! When we do I'm sure we'll need some advice..so don't be surprised if I come back looking for help to build an incubator. Lol.

Colie, my problem is not too little humidity, it's too much! My house generally has a humidity level of 60%, so getting the humidity low for me can be problematic. I'd love to know how many eggs you can get to fit into the Brinsea

. Another question, since you let them hatch upright and in the rails, do they have any room to walk around in the bator? You know how chicks love to walk all over the other eggs..

50% hatch rate from shipped eggs sounds pretty good to me compared to some rates that I've heard.

Yes I know about LG's and I don't think I would ever spend my money on one of those. My friends have one and we had a good hatch once over at their house. But I've borrowed their LG and the hatches that I've done in it since then have done poorly. I tend to only borrow it for emergencies now. Which, thankfully, I haven't had many of this year. I'll look into the Falls Harvest incubators, and I've been hearing a good bit of good news about the Hova Bator 1588 also and I'll definitely be looking into that one more.

Thanks for your help

. Other opinions are greatly welcomed too!

If your house is at 60% humidity, the humidity in an incubator would be much lower at 100 degrees. My house is at 50%, but I still needed to add water to my Hovabator, otherwise it would be at 27%.

Me too!

You can contact anytime for any questions on incubators. But please not about chickens cause this ole boy is still in the learning mode. I'm just getting into Silkies.Anything about incuabtors but chickens,I'm dumb as a box of rocks.

If you would like to get your humidity right, Put your incuabtor in a closed room with no ac vents or no drafts.

I think seeing a difference in all of you partridges color wise as chicks and beyond is pretty normal and to be expected. They are all individuals just like all of your splashes will have a different pattern as they grow you'll see your partridges being different

I didn't realize how freakin' pretty your birds are! I need to come visit and try to smuggle away a few

Tell me though... how did you get your silkies to use that ramp? My ramp looks very similar and none of them will use it! My Richie Roo (RIP) would use it but only to find his ladies and shove them down the ramp if they didn't fall down it in the morning after I had put them all up at night
