Silkie thread!

Probably is a pullet, but I'd not have had it switched the first time round. No way would I do it again. I can be shy about asking people to do things sometimes, though.

For the most part, I haven't seen it matter all that much. I've seen plenty of misidentified sexes at shows without dire consequences. I'm sure there are some shows/judges that take it more seriously as well. Big difference between honest mistake and intentional misrepresentation, though.

I hate judging Silkie sex from photos. Hard enough to do IRL at times.

I'm new to raising chickens and bought 4 silkies from IFA. 3 are roosters so I finally found some hens for sale today and brought them home. The roosters are being very rough with them is this the "pecking order" or do I need to separate them? The hens are quite a bit smaller size wise and they are 2-3 weeks younger than the roo's. Thanks for any advice!

I already sent him an email asking him to change it back. I probbly won't hear back from him tonight. But if it's too late then oh well. I want it to be a pullet anyway. But I don't want to look like an idiot at the show. I've seen plenty of people now know the sex of a silkie till it either crows or lays an egg. I'm one of them. Especially with the sizzles.

wensbirds this is not pecking order, this is too many roosters and too few hens. You don't mention ages. Or how many girls. If these hens are pullets and too young to lay, they are just being abused for nothing. 1 rooster per 10 hens or so is better amount. Do you have other pens of hens that you could put one rooster in each, instead of all 3 together?

How is she?

I gave her a warm bath that evening. She had passed away when I went out the next morning

I hate it BC she was a beautiful bird with LOTS of potential. One of y prettiest. She never pooped, wonder if the egg was blocking her "movements?" Only slight green/clear- gross, I know. Live and learn, I tell ya!

I had 4 buffs to hatch over the weekend. I will be adding those to the flock soon. Got porc/lav, black/split, B/s, buff, and maybe a white. Yaa!!!!

Everyone else made it home safely yesterday. Adjusting nicely in their coops. People kept asking if the whites were for sale. I said, "Nope, I just bought those. They are mine

ETA: RadCuda- I had an egg this morning!!!

I lost my favorite pullet a week ago to the same thing. I didn't know what was going on till too late... I sure know how you feel. I was kicking myself for not seeing the problem sooner. Never experienced egg bound before....

Hope the new little peeps will cheer you up.

LOL I have an email I've been holding onto for several weeks I keep editing rather than sending because I'm afraid it'll either come off as rude or idiotic. It's really sad because it needs done, I just wish someone else would do it.

There's a point when they're quite a bit younger....I'd say 4-8wks maybe, that I can often tell a lot easier in person. I don't know specifically why, it's just something I've been noticing. We got 6 in from Bobbi earlier this year that I said were 3 pairs and they still seem the same. My youngest got a little maybe 4wk old that she just had to have I said cockerel right off the bat. Yep sure is.

Sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to my very best pullet a few months ago. Hopefully these experiences will prepare up to be ready to take quick action if it ever happens again.

Congrats on the egg! I hope she makes lots of nice babies for you.
