Thanks..hey how do you like Georgia and what area did you move to...im thinking i might want to move there eventually for more moderate temps...

We haven't been here real long but so far it is great! I love being able to care for the chickens in a sleeveless shirt in the middle of November!! We are south of Atlanta outside of a small town called Thomaston. It is centrally located to the more major cities like Atlanta, Macon and Columbus and none are longer than an hour away from us if we would need something more. We live in the foothills so it isn't all flat like some other areas we had looked at and coming from the mountains of PA, I did need some sort of hills. LOL The prices are great and we got a great deal on the home and land. It was really move in ready for us and the animals.
If you do decide to come and look around, stop in and say hi!

One of my older girls talks like crazy!

Don't you just love the talkers! Some of them never shut up. I have a pullet I named "Yacker" I love it when they all talk to me when I feed. I find that to be one of the most fascinating aspects of a chicken, all the different sounds that they make. Non- poultry folks just don't have a clue as to how amazing it is, just to sit for an hour and watch and listen to a chicken. I have read that sitting quietly and just listening and watching is a real stress breaker, and it is. I know I always feel better, if I go out and sit and watch the birds, they can be quite comical as well.
A petite silkie is a good thing. Silkies are getting far too big. I have been breeding down in size for a couple of years. When you can barely get your silkie through the door of a bantam coop, it's time to do something. LOL

Actually, she looks the same size as my other Silkies, but her body feels underweight to me. Maybe petite wasn't the right word, sorry!

I think what it is... I'm use to my free rangers, and my Silkies, who have a large pen to themselves (with grass, etc), so they're all really filled out.
The Silkie I bought last month, Cali, has become a big time eater, and I love her size now. The new girl, Kyla, doesn't seem to eat as much as Cali.

So im having problems with my silkies. They wont go up the ramp into the coop. The coop is 3 feet off the groud and the ramp is 8 feet long. Is it cause the coop is to high or the ramp to steep? Also is this common for silkies to not want to enter high rise coops.

I haven't experienced it before as my silkies are in a pole barn but I did read on one of these threads that silkies do not do well on steep ramps. Maybe some with experience will comment. Good luck. I love my silkies!

You can get them to use a ramp but you have to teach them and it requires a little "food" reward. I have chickweed on the ramp here and I place them on it. I also use thawed out frozen corn. They either have to walk up or down. I also use indoor/outdoor carpet tiles cut to fit so they do not slide.
My ramp to the loft inside the coop is steep and so is the one to go outside. After 1 or 2 get it, the others follow.
The loft is their favorite place!
