Silkie thread!

Excuse for a just a second please and let me slide in here with a question.
I can't seem to find any info. on this in my search.
Do any of you fellow silkie breeders know what that colored stuff is, that a hatchery bloops on a newly hatched chicks head to mark it, and where you might be able to purchase it.
I have no idea if it stays on there until the feathers come in or if it just wears off quickly. Anyone know about this?

Hi Ladies

Bobbi Porto uses that. I would say give her a week or so bc I saw another post on here that she lost a loved one recently. I believe it was her Mom

But I'm sure she would be willing to share with you

. I have gotten chicks from her that were 6 wks+ old and I could still see the pale markings.

Also, I am very sorry to hear of Bobbi's loss. I know how difficult that is, I have lost two loved ones in the last year and my heart goes out to her and her family.

My sister ordered a few different laying type chickens, I don't remember what they were, but they were brightly marked on the head with something, I don't know what it was and I can't find anything about it. You remember those bottles of liquid shoe polish that had the long stem with a soft mop looking ball on the end? That is what it looked like they put it on their little heads with. Looks like it would be much easier for marking chicks. I have been cutting tiny colored velcro strips for leg bands to mark chicks, but it is a pain in the butt and this just looks much easier. If it stays on a while it would be much easier to band them after a few weeks.

Thank you for the suggestion April, I have never played Bingo put always wanted to go to one! Looks like fun to me.
I have listened to ladies talk about going to the Bingo Hall here. Talking about 10 playing boards (or whatever you call them) and playing them all at the same time. I bet I would be confused with one!
Anyway, it sounds like a good idea. I will go look at the colors and read the labels. Maybe that is what the hatcheries use. I have only seen that on TV but they do look the same as the old shoe polish method. That idea never entered my mind, but it is a good one.

I have the colored rubber bands too. You are probably more together and diligent about checking them. I was afraid to use them for fear I would miss one, so the thought of that was rather horrifying for me. So I passed on that and went to cutting very brightly colored velcro bands that you can't miss. I cut them extra long but very thin so I can loosen them a little when they get a but bigger. But, like I said, it is a pain. Looks like I will be visiting the Bingo Department tomorrow.

This next picture is off tint b/c I had her in the sunlight from my office tinted windows. She's definitely not this color shown but, the pic was so cute I couldn't resist showing it.
