when I had puppies of one color I used to mark their foot with poodle nail polish - it comes in many colors. With chickens I would adivse NOT using RED. It would last quite awhile and could be reapplied if it's starting to deteriorate.

I used the poodle polish on my mute swans when they were just tykes. I made the mistake of using a reddish color and freaked myself out every single time I saw it...what does that say about my learning curve!?
