Silkie thread!

Beth G. :

When breeding any color, I think alot of breeders main focus is to intro the color first, then work with that color and put it back to improve type. Once you get the color (it doesn't have to be perfect) But, when you've got the color into a great typey bird then you go back to working on other things like comb, toes, and etc.. Hope that makes sense

I think alot of people are under the impression that if a bird has been vaccinated they are good to go. I think that the USDA needs to get out there and really start to educate people on what Mareks really is, Also how much is unknown about it even to the Vet's and Scientists, and that the vaccine is only the herpie's strain found in turkeys. It doesn't cover all wild migatory birds.

I somehow wish USDA and local Dept of Ag's would get pamplets together and have auctions, shows, swaps, feedstores around the US hand them out when purchasing bird, poultry item, or even a bag a feed. And, also put up posters or something. Yes I know it would be costly but, I think it needs to be out there and we need to educated whether your a first time chicken owner, or a professsional breeder. Things change and pop up all the time.

I know I'm asking for alot and it probably will never happen but, All I can say is I'm grateful I get to see my Ag testers every 3 months at my farm b/c they keep me posted and abreast to whats going on out there in the world with respects to disease.

Is there something you can do to protect against Mareks besides the vaccine?

The above gal does have some smutt. Although barely noticeable it is in her tail section and a bit in her wings.

There is also a buff thread on here. Check it out for further advice, pictures, and information

The only vaccine out there approved that I know of is the one that comes from turkeys. If you put the birds in a controlled enviroment meaning like some of the egg laying mass production facilities that would actually be the only way to 99% avoid a bird from getting it. I say 99% b/c you always have to factor in human error and that is one thing that we can never completely avoid I think.

Okay, you do not want to breed them to a white b/c white is like a can without a label as Soran says. You never know whats inside the color genetic codes. I do not feel comfortable enough to get into color genetic talks. It's way above my head and I tend to do things with trial and error. But, I've got an upper hand in the sense I've been doing this a long time. I would suggest you go to the Buff Forum and post a bit on there to ask about color technic and crossing of colors. Or PM Soran or SilverSilkie. They both know alot about genetics and can explain things way way way better than I ever can/could.

I guess that's why some people sterilize their shoes after going into TSC where all the poultry people go to get their supplies.....
