Silkie thread!

Dwegg, fantastic shot with your phone! My new phone has an 8 megpixel camera on it and it is darned impressive, too! Beautiful bird! :)

Scaredof Shadows-- LOVE that color! WOW!! How do you think they got that color? Buff and what else? Or was it an entirely a Buff breeding? Silly, but the first thing that came to mind is that it's kind of like a reverse splash-- except in Buff. ha!

I think it's great that you just joined up!! I'm very sorry about your silkies. :( I think you should go to the Coop maintenance forum and ask about ideas on how to better 'predator proof' your coop and run. Explain what happened there and ask for a great fix. If you don't fix the problem, it'll be unlikely that anyone is going to want to sell you their precious silkie babies knowing that they could be eaten at any time! I know the majority of us do our best to protect our birds. Accidents, of course, do happen-- like leaving the door open without realizing it... Or a very determined predator against a design that you thought was flawless, but yet they got in somehow. I put in all hardware cloth around the base of my coop and then I had about 16 inches extra that instead of cutting off at the bottom-- I dug a nice trench in the ground all the way around and laid the wire into that and then covered it back up with dirt. I can't imagine anything digging under or thru that. I have chain link for the run, however, I know that predators can reach in and grab a bird-- so I make sure that I get them all put up in their coop with the doors locked (bolted and locked with clasps that can't be opened by an animal) right when it's getting dark. Their run is pretty secure, but I take no chances with them.

I hope you get it fixed and have MUCH better luck next time!

SagerSilkie, how is your baby? Is he still showing signs of any congestion (yawning) or has he gotten over it entirely?

I wanted you guys to see the incubator my dear husband built me for Christmas.

WOW!! That incubator is truely impressive! I love your control panel-- flying indeed! Just like a cockpit in an airplane, you have going on there. Looks like a lot of room for hatching below, too. Very nice! Can't wait to hear how well it does for you! Is it holding it's temps steady? Did you insulate it in any way, or is it working fine without? Looks great!

The egg was marked partridge, but I know she said one of her 2 roosters were new, and I hatched one of the first batch of eggs fertilized by him...She only had a Lav roo over black hens, so it could be somehow how Lavender rooster got ahold of a red parti girl? I have NO idea. Many say this color comes from a bad porcelain breeding, this chick definitely has lavender in it, the wings and underfluff of the belly and vent/tail area is definitely lavender. It was ALOT brighter orange and now is lightening out to this color in the picture. I am going to hold onto this one - I plan to get into Porcelain at somepoint this year, so next year may have to experiment with Sherbert and see. lol

Thanks, Hawkeye! Temps are holding good! Candled and 4 of 5 good. The box is 1.25 inch plywood for insulation and double paned plexiglas.
