I have a question for you silkie experts! I already own a white silkie hen, around 8 months old I think, and want to get a few more and possibly a silkie rooster. How do I introduce them, is it the same as how people do other chickens, using a cage inside the run with the new silkies in it? If so, what do I do about night time since there isnt enough room in the coop to put a cage?

Thanks for any help! I am supposed to pic up my new girls tomorrow!

Silkies don't seem at all the same as other chickens. I recently introduced a young roo to his girls "cold turkey" but kept a close eye on things. I was shocked at how little fuss was made. A few days later I added a couple of 8 wk old chicks. I put short branches for the chicks to run under in case they got chased. Absolutely no problems. Of course I'm sure others have lots of exciting tales to tell!

same experience here...I had a 3 month old boy and girl and then i put in 8x one month olds in the coop with them and they all acted like nothing had changed...it was awesome...love the silkies...

although my blue roo did pick on (chase) my little paint silkie for a while but that has settled down

I use my pet pen of silkies to intergrate my teenagers and let them get close to laying age before I put girls in any other pens, the pet silkies are an extremely great bunch, no one cares about babies, youngsters, teenagers. they do however not take kindly to new hens. *shakes head* but it works great for raising up pullets to put in other pens, gives me a bunch more room when I do it this way and less stress. any other boys I've ever had especially older mature roosters will harass new girls even if they are too small or young to breed. my eldest roo - Pika a pet splash is calm and just dances now and again for them. never more than that. he is such a gentleman!

Different individuals will react differently to youngsters. I have lost youngsters by not carefully watching when I try to integrate. Usually the cocks are more accepting than cockerels or hens. There is the rare hen who welcomes and loves to play surrogate mama--those are very valuable birds. A good mama hen will protect her babies (whether she hatched them or adopted them as chicks) from any aggression by others in the flock. Basically, you have to know your individual birds, not just assume that because they are a fairly non-aggressive breed that they will peacefully accept additions to the flock.
