Silkie thread!

Hello All,

I have only had chickens for about 12 months and have recently added 3 x 12 week old silkies to the mix...I have been trying to work out wether this little darling is male or female?

Anyone able to tell?

I am also thinking about getting into 'showing' birds but I have no idea how to tell what qualifies as a show bird. Can anyone point me in the right direction? The last thing I want to register at a show and then feel like an idiot so I thought I would research it now.

This is him/her before the big downpour

Sorry he/she got a bit wet when I was talking this photo due to the rain.

Any help or advise would be great...Thanks so much in advance I really really love my little silkies!

Cheers

Leonie

He looks boy to me because of comb size and vivid coloring. If you are serious about showing you need to study the standard. http://www.americansilkiebantamclub.org/ I have been trying to learn about silkies for a year now and have only just begun. The thing that helped me the most was reading this thread. I started at the beginning and read it all and took notes. It is all very complex but I have enjoyed every minute of it!

Finally Silkies are hatching!! I've been waiting for this day all year cause these are from some I have hatched!!!

Monumental occasion!!

Question for the Splash Silkie breeders - do you tend to lose the spots with splash on splash breeding with Silkies? I believe that is the case with other breeds. My understanding is the best splash birds are produced with at least one blue parent. I've been asked to breakdown numbers in a "B/B/S" egg order and it has me wondering.

I have a couple colors of silkie hatching eggs I am looking for so me and DD can start a color project.
Colors I need:
Pure black
Lavander/Self Blue or even splits
Paint
Buff (do not have to be clear, some leakage in parents is fine)
I would prefer parents who are at leased BQ.

PM if you have or will have any eggs from these colors, how many and how much and I will be in touch with you about it.

You might check with this breeder and see when she will be offering more eggs. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/626022/buy-it-now-24-assorted-color-silkie-eggs-catdance-silkies

Yes, every generation gets lighter.
