Silkie thread!

Thanks ScareofShadows....I was thinking that!

but I don't think I will be able to keep him as I am not into breeding. I live in the city....

How long did it take your silkie babies to learn to roost? Did they even figure it out on their own? Or did you have to teach some of them? Mine have finally learned that the branches I put in thier brooders are for sitting, not for making messes on. And they're only two weeks old today:)

Rookie, Silkies aren't known to roost, their feather structure on the wings is such that they can't fly, so they mostly just pile up in the corner.
There are a few that can, but don't hold your breath!

I built a wee tiny roost for my Silkie. He can step up on to it. Gets him about 6 inches off the ground. He does seem to like it!!

And then you have some like my black roo who insists on roosting between the pens! I finally fixed his wagon, I added 1X1 inch wire all the way up. He's NOT happy. I really should give him a roost. But like Stoopid said, silkies typically don't roost.

These are the porcelains next to the black pen. This is what most of the silkies do:

Funny thing... the black roo can't turn around to get back with his girls in the morning so he ends up in the porcelain pen. For some reason, the porcelain roo doesn't seem to care.

Love those little puff balls!
My Silkies have been very determined to hatch all winter! Five of them crowd into two boxes and don't want to be disturbed. I didn't want hatches this winter and I wanted to select what eggs were hatched but everyday they have eggs under them... at least those eggs don't ever freeze! I worry a bit because I don't think they get up and eat and drink as much as they should. Spring is coming and I may have to give in.

Here is my white cockeral and he is only 5 months old. He has a lot of waxy pin feathers on his head so I hope that means his crest will get bigger. What do you think of him? Is his comb too red?

You can see his waxy pin feathers here.

He is really pretty! His comb is really red, though. But wow-- his foot feathering is GREAT!! Looks like his crest is going to get a bit bigger, too.
