Silkie thread!

Ok another try at the color of this silkie! I kept thinking it might be a splash but now it has orange coming in on its chest and back, but has blue/white splash markings on its wings

It is almost 3 weeks old now and feathers are coming in really pretty, keeping it no matter what. Any ideas? Oh, and the purple dot on the head is from me marking it so I wouldn't sell by accident.

Definitely interesting! Keep us posted!!

Well, basically EVERYTHING (even water) can have side effects. Amprollium mixed in water is not a new form, it is just the form that is used for treatment versus the form used to boost immunity.

Coccidia need thiamine to reproduce. Amprollium is a thiamine blocker. In a prophalactic (preventative) dose, the coccidia can reproduce to a small extent, but not enough to completely overwhelm chicks. Allowing a small amount of coccidia to exist allows the chick to build its own immunity to them. Tests have shown that re-introducing thiamine blocker on a regular interval in adult birds helps keep their immunity high. Note that this is not the same as being completely immune to coccidia; it is that the body can and does fight it, and the chances of a case getting out of hand are lessened.

In a treatment dose, the amprollium prevents all coccidia reproduction. The Merck Veterinary Manual can give you a lot more details. merckvetmanual.com
Thanks for this info. I have often wondering what that was!

Amprolium is NOT an antibiotic. It has NO AFFECT on any bacteria; it is effective at controlling the reproduction of certain types of protozoa which frequently infect the intestinal tract of chickens (and many other species).

From everything I have read, the only side affect would be thiamine deficiency in the bird, and that is when it is given amounts above the recommended dose. You could counter that with vitamins, but then you would essentially be rendering the amprolium ineffective against coccidia.

I have no issue with people raising their animals for natural immunity; I just want to be sure they have accurate information for making their choices.

I have no idea what GSE is.

Guesses as to what these are?

They all have the 5 toes, but the two lighter ones have light feet instead of dark, as are their beaks. Do we think they are silkies??

2 have the darker striping; one has no striping (the one on the bottom right) and only one has the dark spot on the top of the head (also the stripe). These 4 have the dark feet.

Total crap shoot from TSC as to sex and breed; the most we know is that they are bantams, lol. I had her pick out the ones with 5 feathered toes...........
{keeping my fingers crossed!}

The darker yellow/orange chicks look like buff silkies

The whitish/lighter chicks with the yellow skin are most likely sultans

I think Sultans would be ok, too........ they are not listed as breeds that TSC carries, however, the hatchery they get them from has Sultans. So, I agree that they could well be Sultan chicks. Hmmmm. Will have to research them, lol.
