Silkie thread!

BTW-- I candled an egg under my broody that my other hen laid (that I was doing AI with)-- it's on Day 2 and CLEARLY has veins growing out from the center already!!!!!!!!!

She's fertile!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats just it i didn't get them as hatching eggs, I got the already hatched from meyer. I think it might have been an incubator problem, they threw in 5 extra in the order i think to make up for them.

I'm confused; you previously said you got them from breeders? Hatcheries goal is selling lots of chicks, and hte quality tends to be significantly less than you will get from breeders. Unless significant numbers have serious issues, genetic and health issues are not usually addressed. In most cases I doubt that they would be concerned about a few toe curled chicks. Now if ALL the chicks ended up with curled toes or obvious illness, that would be someting they would likely address.

what all do you usually have to do to clean a silkie for a show? (I'm new to silkies, 8 hatching eggs arrive tomorrow and in the incubator they go!)

Thank you!! I can hardly believe it!! I was having such a bad run of luck! Even the entire shipment of eggs I recently got were bad-- nothing developed. I think they were too shook up. ANYway--- I have a baby baking! I'm going to collect more and hang on to them to set them all at once. This is the one that my broody immediately stole and I didn't have the heart to take it away from her. This way she can hatch one and keep it.

Ha! No he didn't change colors. I worked on his dingy yellowish fluff right under his chin and it's still off colored, but a bit lighter. I'm worn out, and I give up for now. I may try again tomorrow with the vinegar. But we're leaving in the morning, so we'll see. I'm bringing it all with me so I can touch him up when we get there.

I just put mine in the sink, and get the water nice and warm and spray them down and suds them up and then wash them out. Takes several minutes really getting everything scrubbed good and rinsed out well. I am just using Hartz puppy flea wash. I did go back and use Dawn on the feathers below their vent-- since those were very dirty and off color. It got it pretty clean and got most of the dingy out. Here is one of mine being washed-- and then I blow dry them out. The blow drying takes about an hour and then I leave them in the house to finish drying out because even after blowing out for an hour-- they are still damp.

You can see why those splash chicks look black when they first hatch!
