Silkie thread!

Is the Brachydactyl gene that bad? I kinda think they should show better with the section missing...makes them look even more fluffy.
It's described as a "mutation". It's not desirable, that's for sure. I don't think it makes the foot look better-- right now because my chick is still just downy and doesn't have the feathers coming in, I think the feet look crazy and off balance! I'm sure that will change as the feathers grow in and cover up the tip that is missing. I've not had a bird judged with this kind of mutation, because all of my birds feet are in tact. We're starting out with 4-H and trying to set up a nice breeding program for my kids for the next 10 years or so. So I'm really worried about the birds I'm starting out with and the chicks we are getting. I just don't want to have to go back and correct problems later on when I could do it now.

These are definitely non-related birds. I raised the hen from an egg in Kentucky and bought the roo here in CA.

Yeah, definitely non related! Well then, it does sound pretty common if you got it with your pairing! Good to know, thanks!!! :) I'll try not to get so worked up about these toes!

This is the chart I have. Is it accurate? How much of that arrow does the cushion include?

Looks like I'm wrong! It shows the cushion as being the upper or side of the tail?? I'm starting to wonder about our poultry leaders! LOL They told me something else that I mentioned in another thread (I won't say it here-- it turns out it's illegal to do!) and we were told it was okay to do on show birds. Sigh. This is a great chart! :)

Well, obviously the cushion includes more than that one spot! I'd like to know how much. This chart doesn't even show the roo having a cushion! Is that right???

Speaking of toe issues, a few years ago I bought eggs from cj's silkies and hatched out some 6-toed chicks. They looked really weird. I had never seen that before. Here are pics:

When I think cushion, I think of what is labeled here as "fluff." The very similar diagram in my Bantam Standard has the "cushion" line ending lower than in this diagram. But in both cases it is what I consider the saddle--on females just significantly less pronounced than on males.

Sorry, but are you saying the part labeled fluff and the saddle area are both cushion?

Hi there,
I just got rid of the last of my hatchery birds (as pets only) and I'm getting some much better quality birds from various BYCers. I would love to get into showing but I'm not sure how to begin. I understand most shows are over for the season but I'd love to be ableto get a head start on my planning so I can go to an early show in fall (if I have a bird good enough). I was told it would be a good idea to get someone already showing to mentor me... So if anyone would be willing to talk me through to my first show, I'd be so extremely grateful. Thanks :)
