Silkie thread!

Hi there,
I just got rid of the last of my hatchery birds (as pets only) and I'm getting some much better quality birds from various BYCers. I would love to get into showing but I'm not sure how to begin. I understand most shows are over for the season but I'd love to be ableto get a head start on my planning so I can go to an early show in fall (if I have a bird good enough). I was told it would be a good idea to get someone already showing to mentor me... So if anyone would be willing to talk me through to my first show, I'd be so extremely grateful. Thanks :)

We're doing 4-H showing right now and our shows are still running and our last show will be in August and then we'll start in with Fall shows. I think the only time we don't have shows is in winter. Maybe you could check the APA and ABA for listings of shows or contact your County Extension office for any listings?? That's great that you are getting some birds that will be better for showing, I think you'll have a lot of fun. My son is also doing Showmanship, and you sure learn a LOT more doing that than with just judging. We've made him up lots of flash cards for the history of the silkie, origin, any famous authors that wrote about them, and then just your general run of the mill questions that they'll come up with. He's done really well.

You may find local shows here: http://www.exhibitionpoultry.net/

I had another online poultry magazine source, but I can't seem to find it now.

No, that what the diagram labels cushion I have always called saddle, and what it lables fluff I have considered to be cushion. It would be interesting to get a licensed judge to weigh in on this.

Oh , GOOD to know-- then I wasn't told wrong? I was told by our Poultry leader that all the fluff under the tail was "cushion" and that the saddle was right on the back near the tail. My son has been pointing out these parts in Showmanship and so far has not been corrected. We had an ABA judge at our last show..

Woohoo 12 Silkie eggs in the incubator as we speak! Can't wait for them to hatch as my first batch (using a different incubator or course) was horrible.

We have 6 eggs from the grey/silver silkies and 6 that are of unknown color!

Wish me luck

For what it's worth, I have a copy of the SOP in my lap, opened for another issue at a show this weekend.
"NOTE: Feather leg breeds are not to be penalized for a rudimentary outer toe."
"Missing nail -1"
"Missing part of toe, each toe -1"
And don't think just because a bird came from different states, it is not related.
Lots of people are shipping eggs everywhere, they could possibly be closely related!
