I am thinking I have too many roos. But I keep going back and forth about what to do. I really enjoy them all, just not sure I have enough space. So, do you keep the nicest, or the most versatile? Do you keep one you may not use for a generation or three? Or only the ones you are going to need now?

I want to do a B/B/S pen, but do I really need a roo of each color? I so need to get some more nice pullets. Two of the pullets I bought turned out to be roos, and now I have more roos than pullets.

I am also going to get rid of my whites and buffs, because I really don't think I am going to use them.... So unsure of what to do.

Any advice?

Jessy, what size bandettes do you use?

adults hens 9 roos 9 - 11 depending.

I just got a set of 7s to match my set of 9s (blue # 1-25) so I can put on the youngsters who are coming up in age but not big enough to keep a 9 on securely yet, by that age I want to start keeping track of them. Its still VERY much a work in progress as I'm new to banding and keeping track. I thought about wing banding (which really is the BEST method for keeping up with individuals from day one and you never have to change the band) eventually I will probably move to using wingbands as a more permanent form of ID.

Hawkeye - Here is what colors I have out in my grow out pens at the moment :

Purple 1st hatch of 2012 (Geri Godina)
Blue 2nd hatch (also Geri)
White - Jonah's pen (my own offspring)
Grey - SouthSide Silkie Shack
Black - Catdance
Yellow - Anne L.

anyone I decide has 2 or more issues/faults get a green zip Green for GO - I am so far loving this method, that way I know really quick what chicks or youngsters are destined to go, or I can go back over them before I decide to sell and make sure I'm not making a mistake (lol).

If you have an outstanding boy with all the 'right stuff' - hold onto him if you plan to work on that color. Even if you don't have girls right now...Boys will do fine in a bachelor pen (all boys) or in separate small 'solo' pens by themselves.

for BBS I say keep a Blue and Splash roo - and mix the girls. you don't really need black unless your blue need darkening or either color needs type improvement that you have in some black birds...

Thanks Jessy. I have a blue and a black and I was trying to decide between them. The black I also can use on my paints. And then I have my awesome splash that I will certainly keep. And my paint roo. So hard when you don't really want a TON of birds, but still want to do it right.

We have 31 Silkie eggs under our hens. They should start hatching Friday of this week (4/27).
Now. The problem is that there's no way we'll need all those chicks IF they all hatch. I'm hoping they all do not hatch, usually they don't anyway. But still, that's a lot of chicks that we do not need. lol How we ended up with so many eggs was because we are a large farm with several people caring for the animals each day, people just didn't know to keep track of the eggs and surprise! There were 31!

We are located in East Haddam, CT. Would anyone be interested in taking some chicks once they have all hatched? I'm thinking they'll all be pet quality. I don't see why there couldn't be a couple of breeding quality birds, but what do I know? lol I'm not an expert.

Oh, I probably SHOULD have a blank for vaulted. I just mentioned it in the "Comments" section I created. I think I'll go back and add that! That is so neat that you did yours in Corel, too! I love that program. I have a bachelors in Graphic Design and worked in the industry for several years before I became a SAHM, but even then, I still do logos and design work for small businesses around here. I never really liked AI compared to Corel. Did you make a space for the wings, or do you include that in your Comments? Looks like I'm going to do some more modification!

Yes, I have a section for wings and feet. I use a whole 8 1/2 x 11 sheet for each chick. But I need the green band! Every time some one wants to buy a chick, I have to look through 1/2 a doz. to find one I'm willing to sell! Gosh, I have used Corel for 20 years. Started with 5. I am an artist also.

I have one blue roo for four hens, black, splash and blue.

I have so few hens that I can tell their eggs apart and thus I know who babies are who's. That won't work for long.

sheesh.. I am having a problem finding hens!! Right now I have 2 that are laying and 2 that are up and coming. And all these roos, lol! Problem is with the exception of 2 of the girls, I really like my roos a lot better. I think they are a lot nicer (different breeder than the girls). I do like the two that are coming up. They are 7 and 4 mo old and I am just hoping they stay girls, lol!!
