Silkie thread!

For anyone in the So. Cal., Orange County area,...
I have a 3 to 4 month old Showgirl Roo who is in need of an immediate re-homing.
He has just started crowing, and he needs to go to a home where roo's are ok to have.

if anyone is interested in adopting him, please let me know.
Thanks

One of our chicks wants to be a TURKEY!!

Our Silkie & Turkey coop basically is one building, split in half with a wall. Somehow, one of the new chicks has managed to squeeze through the tiny little gap between the wall board and the floor. Of course, first we thought the little one went missing when we were doing a head count! No "Stripey" anywhere. So we're getting really worried and wondering what happened and how it could have gotten out. The coop and pen are pretty well "baby proofed". We were sure "Stripey" had dissapeared because we couldn't find a dead body anywhere. Or something or someone somehow got in and took the poor baby.
Well. I went to check on the turkeys later, they've been sitting on their eggs forever now. Looks like Sir Joe hasn't been doing his job. lol And there was "Stripey"!!!

The turkey girls were so upset when I took "their" baby away. After a thorough inspection of the coop I found the small gap and made sure it was blocked well. No more escaping. For anyone!!

I'm glad those turkies took good care of the Silkie chick and didn't kill her/him.
Has this happened to anyone else? Another animal taking over their chicks? lol
Wow! You have really nice turkeys!!

i know this doesn't really "match"this post but do silkie roosters crow as loud as standard breeds do they crow 24/7 too????
Every bird is different. I have different breeds silkies, batams, and large fowl. My silkies don't typically crow as loud as the Larger birds do, BUT I have had 1 silkie roo with a devil of a set of lungs on him.
Sometimes my yard can be quiet for most of the day, and other days I have crowing wars going on for a half hour here and there throughout the day. it just depends. My girls typically make more fuss with their egg songs throughout the day than the boys do.

I agree, and every place setting can be different too. If you have other roos around, the Silke roo is more apt to compete with them. While my Silkies are not quite as loud as my Marans, they can be quite vocal and have a much higher pitch to their voices. All my boys crow on and off all day long, and if I turn on a porch light at night, they will start to crow as well! Oh yes, all of my boys, Silkies and Marans, take a huge part in the egg song!! It always makes me laugh when the whole flock gets the BA-GAWK! choir going!!

My Silkie Roo crows, but not as much as my other roos. it might be because he's a house pet and maybe his age. He is six, although my EE roo who is eight never shuts up.

thanks for that info i got 4 silkies and 3 of them are roos they haven't started crowing yet but if i becomes a problem i am most likely going to re-home 2 of them. but what sucks that most is my silkie roos r the sweetest (much more calm than the hen)

I did a really stupid thing this week. I took my kids with me to get our new silkie chicks and of course as soon as all three started grabbing and freaking out over how cute they were my brain just shut down. I was so busy trying to make sure that the kids were all holding them properly while also talking to the breeder that I didn't check them out as well as I should have. After briefly checking that none of them had any nasty vents or visible health problems I just told the kids to take the chicks to the car while I paid the breeder. I didn't check their feet! I just flat out forgot to count toes and when I got home only three of the eight chicks have five toes. The others have four and one of those actually has one of it's four toes on each foot curled under the whole foot. It walks on a toe. I don't know what the appropriate action is for the ones that aren't SQ/BQ. What do you all do with the ones that ultimately you don't have a place for? Do you try to sell them to someone else as pets? Is that frowned upon? I am so upset that this guy actually passed these off like he did. He has been raising them for 20+ years so I know he did it on purpose. It is my fault for not checking like I should have, but he knew my kids wanted them for show and breeding and he didn't say a word. As far as the one with the toes curled under the feet, how is that treated?
