What is the going rate for selling silkie chicks, newly hatched to 2 weeks old? It is time for me to sell some.I was thinking 5 each . Any input would be great !!

That would be a decent price in my book, but I'm FAR from being an expert! Two other questions arise: Do you ship, and what are the shipping cost?

We are just getting into BYC and my kids have become truly excited about it all. It's amazing because we operate an exotic animal rescue & they have seen every sort of exotic creature from parrots to pythons and from tarantulas to big monitor lizards. All they can talk about is chickens! When they discovered that Silkies existed they completely flipped and told me they have to get a couple.

Tell me, how do silkies get along with other breeds?

I am sorry that you had a bad day yesterday. Here's hoping that today is a much better day. Also, thank you for all of your knowledge that you share here with us, especially about Silkies!

LF was also mentioned. I suspect that the writer wasn not in the US. FWIW, I've seen plenty of silkies whose earlobes age to red. Especially males, but females, too.

Oh! Okay, I was thrown by the LF talk, too. Really?? So those blue ears go red, hu? Would that be a DQ when/if they change? My little hatchery cockerels started out looking red with just a tiny hint of blue in them. From reading the SOP, it sounded like that was a bad deal.

I think it would depend on their quality, personally. You could sell them for more money if they were from birds that you are showing and doing well. If they have all of their toes, and good spacing. If not, you should be very honest about what you are selling. I think non-show birds can sell just fine too, be sure if someone asks, that you are honest with whatever you have and I think you should show pictures of the parents. I won't buy from anyone that doesn't show me pics of their parent birds and other offspring. The last breeder I bought from-- I bought eggs, so I KNOW I can get anything. But, I still asked how the majority of their birds hatched-- if they generally had good toes, if they've ever had split wing... I was really picky. Others won't care, so price according.

They should get along fine. Mine are dominant. Mine chase around my barred rocks and Wyandottes. But they get along great with my Polish and don't bother them. I guess they don't see my Polish as a threat.

Seeing pictures of day olds probably isn't going to help. Blue, splash, and lavender can look VERY similar at hatch and even down the road. You really have to know what the genetic history of the chicks is. Failing that, the only way to know what genes your bird is carrying is to breed it and see what it throws out of various pairings - keeping careful records all the while.

PS. Lav and Bl are completely different genes that don't mix productively. If you are working with lavender and blue (splash), you REALLY need to keep the pens clearly defined and separate.

Sonoran, question for you!! Can you tell me why this is a grey and not a Columbian? I'm so confused now! LOL I've been following the Columbian project off and on for a while now. Is it because he doesn't have the black in his hackles and more black in his tail like the other Columbian's have? To my very untrained and uneducated eye, this really looks Columbian. Give me the low down!

(obviously I'm not ready to work with this color!! --but I knew that already)

OMGosh!! You have a Columbian!? Is this your rooster?? This is the color project I want to work on in a year or two down the road! (when I learn more so I know what I'm doing!--HA!) Did you get him from a breeder that was working on Columbian? He's pretty!

He is my rooster and about two years ago, I got him from the farm where I live now. lol So he's "back home". He just happened to turn out handsome, there was no breeding of any kind behind these birds. We have all sorts of colors in a pen together and they pretty much get to breed whatever they want. Our Silkies are here mainly for our visitors to learn more about silkies. And for pets too, of course!

Yes, if you get a white chick with only one white parent then either the other parent carries recessive white (assuming the whites are recessive), or alternatively the white parent is dominant white. But dom white is usually very leaky, and to get a pure white bird requires a lot of "helper" genes such as silver and barring
