Indeed I know. This is caused by a melaniser which is a black-pigment intensifier. This is a gene I need for the Silver Quail coloration

So you really need to see this green in the blacks!

And heavier breeds won't do much flying, either. There are some (like hamburgs, for example) that are very flighty and some do clip to keep them from flying all over. Out of my big girls, I have a single production red, and she's the only one who's figured out she can fly over the 3 foot garden gate.

I haven't done anything with that this year yet because I need to do something with the fence before planting, lol.

But, I won't clip wings or beaks, particularly with silkies because they are not flyers.

hah I have a super fat easter egger hen who will fly over the layers six foot fence. I have plenty of smaller bantams that easily get over 3 or 4 ft fences, and can hop/fly to get up onto of my sheds.

Silkies typically have trouble jumping more than 2 feet at any age. I do not recommend cutting silkie wings.

here is some pics outside hope these are better and sonoran so sorry for saying u were wrong about the vault i refelt it as taking the pics and it dose have a vault i must of been to excited last night again sorry.

They look like my splash and my splash also get pink toes. Pink disappears in about 4 weeks and light toenail stay. You should be able to tell when the wing feathers come in. Lavender will be even pale blue and splash will be a mixture of white and shades of pale blue to black.

Yes, your birds must be about double! Mine are feather weights. Thank you for the compliment on my chicken coop! I worked so long on it, I was tired of working on it!

How did you base your birds off of Silver? Did you just have to start with silver based birds? That seems like a really stupid question, but I've wondered about it!

No such thing as stupid questions. I not know for the US Silkies but the EU Silkies Black, Blue, Splash, white are about all gold based. We have here Silver Mulyiple laced Partridge (is something as what you call "gray") so I crossed first all with these Silver Partridges to be sure that the birds I breed with are all Silver based (took 4 generations). The roosters I posted are from that 4th generation BlueSilver and BlackSilver (I had also WhiteSilver which is the equivalent of Columbian but I stopped with these because I wanted to give all my birds the "moarhead" = black crest and beard). From here I could go on for making the "new" colorations as Silver Quail, Blue Silver Quail, Dark Silver Partridge, Blue Silver Partridge.
Was also the lavender Silver Quail but of them all my roosters died suddenly this winter !!

Hey everyone! So I posted some pictures of this chick on here when it was younger, and it was too early to tell. Well this chick is now about 7 weeks and starting to feather out some more

This is my second silkie and my first time raising it from a chick. it's super sweet and doesn't pick on any of the other chicks.
I can't keep any roosters so I really hope it's a girl!

Not obvious to me yet. Maybe someone else will have an opinion! Hope it's a girl!!

No it's not needed but when you see it you know it have that melanizer "Melanotic" in genetics "Ml/Ml".

Indeed you can call it a little tragedy because was a selection of 5 generations that is for a part wasted now.
