Silkie thread!

Aww thanks peepblessed...I got another one where blue is laughing at cupcake and cupcake is looking back like what on earth u laughing at...but it's a little blurry (lame) lol but I heart cupcakes expression. Who'd knew chicken has such jazzy personalities .

Comb is redder than I prefer, but acceptably dark for hte standard of mulberry. Horns are not a DQ, although they are a defect. About 15 or 20 years ago the standard required them. I can't see them in the photo. I do see the protuberances like in a rough textured rose comb, and don't care for them. The standard doesn't really address the texture, so that also would not be a DQ.

Sanna, I really like him. Yes, his comb and wattles are too red for sure.... BUT, this is a color that people are working on and they are having the same issues. He would be a great start. It'll be so wonderful when they get this color all ironed out. I'd love to be a part of it. If it were ME--- I would go hunt someone down that has a Columbian hen and see what you get! Try to get one that has a nice dark comb. Breed them and be SUPER picky about ONLY breeding back the correct Columbian color-- or as close to. I love your boy!!! I was so shocked when you posted his picture! LOL I dream about this color being perfect. Since he is not an approved color, you can not show him in the typical sense... BUT, you could show him as an AOV-- which is basically the project colors people are working on like Paint, and of course, Columbian! I hope your hatch goes well!! Good luck with your babies!!

Thanks guys! You guys have been the bringer of good news for me today! lol

I'll have to see if I can find a Columbian hen in my area, or somewhere not too far to be shipped safely. That would be very interesting!
Curly appreciates all the nice compliments! I hope he won't get a big head.

To go with the theme of my day. I found another chick dead. I kept checking on this little one coming out of the egg every hour. And of course when the vet arrived to check on a couple of horses, I spent a good two hours with her. When I got back to the chick, I found it dead out of the egg. Took pictures this time!

Is this a normal looking just hatched chick? Is the belly supposed to be round and yellowish like that?

What gets me is that it seemed like it was working it's way out of the egg without a problem. Sounded strong and loud.
I found some blood on the shavings near the hens. I'm wondering if Miss Ruby is not so good at parenting and had something to do with the death of this chick and the previous one that died. Ruby is just about a year old, her first time sitting on eggs.
Originally this chick was under the super mom Chicken Little. When I came back to find the dead chick, it was under Ruby. Chicken Little must have gotten up and sneaky Ruby stole the egg. If I remember correctly, she had the shells of the previous dead chick as well.
If the chick in the pictures is a normal looking chick, Ruby will be fired!! lol Any zipping egg I can find under her is going to the three girls in the other end of the coop that already have the healthy chicks and some eggs left. For some reason our 6 hens have divided theirselves in each end of the coop. Three and three in each end. lol

Do you have an incubator or another broody hen you KNOW is a good mama? It really sounds like the broody hen is doing it. Either shes stepping on them, or pecking them, most likely stepping/squishing them. I have had hens do it, and it sucks. It is the only thing I can think as to why a baby that hatched out well would die still wet.

That's what I was afraid of.
Yes, we have lots of other hens that are excellent moms. As soon as I hear or see something coming out of an egg under Ruby, they're going to the other 3 girls in the far corner. All our hens decided to go broody at the same time and they're all sitting (except for the two young pullets). lol
I'm so sad about the two dead chicks, looks like they were going to be white.

This young lady will be getting the zipping eggs from now on. She can have all the eggs as far as I'm concerned. lol She's so serious about her eggs that she doesn't even mind the other hens, that are taking care of the chicks, burying her in the shavings. lol

Hey everyone! So I posted some pictures of this chick on here when it was younger, and it was too early to tell. Well this chick is now about 7 weeks and starting to feather out some more

This is my second silkie and my first time raising it from a chick. it's super sweet and doesn't pick on any of the other chicks.
I can't keep any roosters so I really hope it's a girl!

Anyone else have any ideas as to what gender this is?

So jealous u have a laid back dog... My poodle likes to like me if I give her the chance where my schnauzer just barks barks....

Well we didn't leave her alone with Einstein! You aren't too far from us. About 5 hours. I used to live at 1604/151 in SA. I currently go to UIW for my doctorate. Nice to meet you. My daughter is Trinity Blue!

So I got 7 new peeps yesterday. 3 blues, 2 blacks and 2 splash. They are all SO cute!! We are really enjoying them.

Here is one of my blues. I just love her little "punk rock" look. They are right about a month old, and we named her Brooklyn in honor of Adam Yauch.

And here is one of my other babies who is just a tad older. She (positive thinking here) is a solid paint and her name in Yin.
