He's very handsome. Looks like my boy.
I had a similar thing happen with my last broody..and I mean last..she went her way..but I went out to check on peeps, because I knew it was hatch day. There was a baby laying right there in front of her..off to the side a bit. I picked it up, limp and cold. My DH was out there, and I showed him talking about how mad I was at that mom. Maybe mother nature tells them something? Then, it barely moved! I mean that chick, was just laying there as limp as could be, it's head flopped sideways, I said to my husband, it moved! I ran into the house, turned on the brooder light, help it up..right up under the light. It started warming up. It started to move again! I held it there, turning it over every now and again. Finally, I heard a cheep! Then it really started to move. I finally got it warm enough to put it down, but right under the light. I watched this little baby pick it's head up. Then I watched as it opened it's eyes for the first time for me. I was talking to it like no other. I ran and told my DH..he was working outside..and he couldn't believe it, he had to come and see. That little blue Ameraucana made it! Within 2 hrs. it was walking around. I went out to check on the other baby that had hatched. She still had an egg that hadn't hatched yet, and got up..to eat and drink! Left the other baby there, and it was still damp! I just brought the baby in, and the other egg. That poor mama was confused for a few days, but oh well. My babies were safe and warm. The egg I put in the bator didn't hatch. Thanks guys! You guys have been the bringer of good news for me today! lol![]()
I'll have to see if I can find a Columbian hen in my area, or somewhere not too far to be shipped safely. That would be very interesting!
Curly appreciates all the nice compliments! I hope he won't get a big head.![]()
To go with the theme of my day. I found another chick dead. I kept checking on this little one coming out of the egg every hour. And of course when the vet arrived to check on a couple of horses, I spent a good two hours with her. When I got back to the chick, I found it dead out of the egg. Took pictures this time!
Is this a normal looking just hatched chick? Is the belly supposed to be round and yellowish like that?
What gets me is that it seemed like it was working it's way out of the egg without a problem. Sounded strong and loud.
I found some blood on the shavings near the hens. I'm wondering if Miss Ruby is not so good at parenting and had something to do with the death of this chick and the previous one that died. Ruby is just about a year old, her first time sitting on eggs.
Originally this chick was under the super mom Chicken Little. When I came back to find the dead chick, it was under Ruby. Chicken Little must have gotten up and sneaky Ruby stole the egg. If I remember correctly, she had the shells of the previous dead chick as well.
If the chick in the pictures is a normal looking chick, Ruby will be fired!! lol Any zipping egg I can find under her is going to the three girls in the other end of the coop that already have the healthy chicks and some eggs left. For some reason our 6 hens have divided theirselves in each end of the coop. Three and three in each end. lol
LOL Ok I have a confession... I used to wear my hair like this...![]()
So I got 7 new peeps yesterday. 3 blues, 2 blacks and 2 splash. They are all SO cute!! We are really enjoying them.
Here is one of my blues. I just love her little "punk rock" look. They are right about a month old, and we named her Brooklyn in honor of Adam Yauch.
And here is one of my other babies who is just a tad older. She (positive thinking here) is a solid paint and her name in Yin.
