Shipped eggs take a terrible beating even when packed well. The only way to know for sure it was infertile would be to break it a look for the bullseye. I have purchased many shipped eggs from many reliable breeders and three times I got a zero hatch. One time I got one out of 12. Once I got 14 out of 20. You just never know. Please be happy if you get a few. :)

x2.

I have heard you are lucky if you get 50% from shipped eggs. I recently bought a dozen from a very well known silkie breeder. In the end, I hatched out 4 and I am VERY happy to have those 4! Of course, this may have been attributed to being my first ever hatch. The same hatch, all 3 of my non-shipped eggs hatched. But those 4 I got from the shipped eggs..... so worth it!

I went on craigslist this morning to see what silkies were available in our huge area. One ad for silkies and it was a wanted ad. I never see any on there that aren't hatchery types. I get 2 or 3 people contacting me each wk. wanting silkies. I rarely have to advertise anything.

Wow! Send them my way...... I have a hard time selling any!

I am happy I got them, I am only worried about how attractive they are to dogs, this is why I originally ruled out silkies. I have a dog & yes she chases them if they are in their cage & fluttering around because they are excited or something. I love how docile they are they are Alma is the one with the more yellow head & she is a lover.
The major difference is a large crested silkie can't see the predators coming. They are less flighty that more breed. JMO

I have a question...I have a mix silkie.Had four but 3 got attacked and died.Im thinking about getting a few more so he has a buddy. But what if he attacks the lil ones???Is that good or bad and if so bad what do I do?I dont want to get them and right when they arrive they feel uncomfortable??
Just separate them with wire that they can become acquainted though with for a couple of days and then put them together but watch carefully. If there is a big age difference it may take longer. Provide a space for the little ones to escape if the big one chases them.

The chicks I hatched in April are around 11 weeks old now.
As some of you may remember, this is my first "real" year raising silkies.
I've had chickens for years, but I bought my first pair of silkies last year.

I'm having so much fun with all the babies! And I think I can tell I have some boys in the bunch.
I know it's hard to tell with silkies though.

So, should I be figuring out genders this early, or could it still go either way?

For example, I believe this splash chick is a boy.

And this one looks girly to me, but I'm guessing it could change?
I'd like to see a side view of the top one. The bottom one has a very male beak. Are you sure they are 11 weeks. They look younger to me. They are really pretty!!!
