Silkie thread!

now if I know one of my polish tolbunt is a rooster and is chest bumping my white silkie does that make my white silkie a roo that is 2 months old if it chest bumps back? Sorry 4 the dumb question lol. I thought mybe the chicken know who is who maybe.

Quite possibly. My girls are usually pretty much done with the chest bump by two months but some girls like to push their weight around even when grown!

I assume you are referring to the bird in 17710? In those two pictures, the OP seems to think one wing is split and the other isn't. They both look split to me.

I intend to show my bird in question in the fall so I'm sure I'll find out soon enough from the judge if he is DQ'd!!

(However, I would prefer NOT to embarass myself if it really is a split wing.) Bird in question is just 7 months old so I suppose it could still be an immaturity thing? Or, even better, I simply don't know yet how to properly evaluate a wing?

Can you get a picture of him for us? The trick to looking at wings, is to just use the tip of your fingers to pull the wings so your fingers under the wing doesn't make the feathers fall into place.

BarnGoddess--- I took some pictures of an 11 week old chick this morning that I *think* might have split wing. Now, I realize 11 weeks is WAY too early to be deciding... but it seems so obvious to me, that I took pictures for a reference so I can go back later and see if she improves or worsens. I put all these pictures into a file and it helps me go back and see what the problem was.

11 week old chick:
Left wing:

Right wing views:

Now you can see I have my fingers under her wings which is supposed to be a no-no, but I was trying to be very careful not to move any feathers and make them look better or worse. I was just trying to pull her wing out gently, as she was fighting me.

Anyway, take some pictures of both sides and maybe we can see something you don't? Or help you decide.

My son sat on the grass with this bird and I pulled her wings out while he held on to her body under her wings.

I'm glad you are showing it! That's what I would do if I could because I don't know what amount of split makes a split wing. 1/8th inch, 1/2 inch, 1 inch. Maybe it depends on the judge. I saw a sight on another breed (split is DQ in all breeds) and they showed a slight split as "weak wing" a fault but not a DQ.

One of my goals for this thread is to nail down a clear definition of split wing. This chick looks split but also looks like a very immature wing to make a decision on.

I have another show July 11th (birds will be on exhibit until the 14th). I will see if I can corner down the judge and ask him about split wing!
