Silkie thread!

Last week I purchased my very first chicken, a little Silkie we now call Vern (eventhough we don't know if it's a he or she lol)

My boyfriend was totally against me getting a chicken and pretty much thought it was a stupid idea to have one as a pet. After almost a week, poor little Vern was pretty lonely and wanted held ALL DAY (which I didn't mind a bit!). This, however, was an excellent excuse to talk Boyfriend into getting Vern a playmate :0) During the week we have had him, he must have made a really good impression because I was able to buy two more instead of one!

We just got them yesterday, but I am in love already! They are so lovable! I'm so excited about our new additions and can't wait until they get older!

Such cute babies...just watch out because chickens, especially silkies, are addicting! You start with one and before you know it, you've got a dozen!
:)

When hatching my silkies, I too had trouble getting my humidity up. Someone suggested to me that I put "SUPER PLUS" tampons soaked in water to get my humidity up and keep it there. I had 4 in the incubator in addition to the sponges in the incubator. I placed the tampons in the incubator in such a way to where I opened the vents quickly and used a dropper of water to rewet the tampons. I know, might be weird, but it truly worked. I was able to get my humidity to 79% and keep it there until the chicks hatched.

Great and creative idea!! Never would've thought of that, but now I have to buy some...oh, I'll send my son

If you are hatching on day 19 your thermometer is off and reading low. 99.5 will give you a hatch on day 21.

Not hatching on day 19, just going into lock down. They usually hatch on time, one may be a few hours early or late.

It's looking like I've had some late quitters since Thursday....I know that at least one of seven is alive. I haven't had any very late quitters till last hatch---I lost three (though I know it happens all the time, so I have to just accept it). But, my heart hurts.....

The only change was an auto-turner.....WELL, I'm going back to hand turning. I have about six more Silkies due for hatching next Friday, and I actually like turning them myself. Maybe I will get a few at least, if not just one. Praying...

So, I am at day 18 and have started LOCKDOWN !! I turned the automatic turner off this morning and am trying to raise the humidity to 70*.

I swear I saw an egg move a little bit. I swear I saw it wiggle a couple of times. Rocked ever so slightly.

Is that possible?? Or am I certifiable? Please help the newbie!

Is there anyone in Georgia on here, near the Coweta Co. area, who sells good BQ Sillkie eggs?? I want Silkies sooo bad, but scared to risk my little $ on shipped ones....these have been a near nightmare....especially, because I want them so much.

Yup, that's how it all starts!

Two years ago I started with 4; two chicks and two hens. One of the chicks turned out to be a rooster. Next spring I hatched 6 eggs. Then I moved to a farm that already had 5 Silkies. This year we hatched 9 chicks and I'm looking into ordering some NICE eggs to improve our flock!

You know you'll have more than just the 3. Silkies are like a disease, can't just have one...or two...or three....you have to have lots. lol And the silkies will take care of convincing your boyfriend that there should be more of them. They did it with my boyfriend. lol He loves the silkies.

Thank you!! And phew.

I haven't looked at them much during incubation as they're really not too exciting as just eggs, haha. But now if they are really in there getting ready to hatch, moving and peeping, I AM going to be watching that pot to boil all the time!! Ack! Heaven help me. Three days is an awfully long time to wait.....

My silkie hen decided to go broody again. I was wondering if anyone in Ohio has some eggs from good quality stock that I can purchase. I know this isnt the bst thread but I am not having any luck. My hen is just not throwing any good chicks so I want to replace her eggs with better quality. You can pm me if you can help. Thanks
