Silkie thread!

Sadie, I totally feel for you! My babies have been in the coop for a few weeks now. But the good news is that my stay friendly. Maybe even more so because they get better treats now. ;)
Finishing up my Silkie Coop this weekend. My babies will be 8 weeks old this Sunday and I guess it's time to move them outside. I'm going to miss them! It's been so much fun to grab them out of the brooder in the house and snuggle with them. I love the way they settle in and sing and coo while we hold them. I hope they'll still be as friendly after I move them into their new digs.
It's tempting to keep them in the house with me but I suppose that would be wrong. They truly are chickens and not beanie babies after all...

Oh... but then they'll get bigger and one day will be broody and I can order more Silkie eggs for them to hatch and then I'll have a whole new bumper crop of babies to play with...

I do love my layer flock, but who thought I'd ever be this crazy about a bunch of soft, sweet, fuzzy little chickens? Thank goodness for this thread. I know I'm not the only one off my rocker!

Can anyone tell me what color this chick is? Has white on wings and totally white feathers on feet.

I feel the same....I am trying to find out how I can keep 4 colors outside without my neighbors or the city giving me grief. It's so tempting to try and keep them in the basement. I love chicks, too, and miss my little mutts, but I have lot's of Silkie eggs that will hopefully be hatching in 3 weeks. Oh, how will I ever keep the roosters quiet???

I have one banty rooster who is semi loud, but no one has complained, thank the Lord....I am planning on selling that pair when the Silkies are old enough to crow....What to do, what to do? Anyone have a way to buffer the noise?

I keep my chickens in the coop until 9:30am or so, my roo gets it all out of his system.....until around 8pm and he starts up again a few times, then he puts the hens to bed.

When I locked up the coop tonight, I checked in to see who was where. Much to my surprise, my little Partridge roo and Patridge hen were cuddled up together in one of the nesting boxes. He was singing to her, she normally treats him like a little punk, but she seemed to be enjoying his love song. He normally coos and sings when I hold him, he is such a sweetie. Hopefully, they will make some pretty babies together at some point. It was nice to see them getting along and all lovied (as my daughter would say) up together. I just felt the need to share. It was sweet.

I put my rooster in a cage in the garage in the evening and cover it with a blanket. Then in the morning around 10 I let him out with his girls. He crows a while then is quiet all day. Then in the evening when the girls put themselves to bed he wonders back over to the back door and waits for me to put him back in the garage for the night. Its a little extra work but worth it.

I think Penny will be fine so far no swelling. Thank goodness. The dang bees are coming out with this heat. I think my little paint might be a boy too but he/she is only four months. Cleo patria is adorable.

Suzie, how is a paint "made" (for lack of a better word)? Is it a genetic combination to create that look or is it more of an appearance thing? For example, one of my splash chicks has very distinct white/black markings...does that make him a paint instead of a splash? It's appropriately named Spotty-Dottie. I'm just curious.

I have a partridge silkie which I was wondering how she came about too. Her colors were not "planned" considering they were all from BBS pens? Genetics fascinate me and someday I'd like to understand them.

I found this about the paint Silkie and how it came about and thought it was interesting.

If you look at this pic the one one the left is a splash and the one on the right is a paint. A paint will have solid black spots and a splash will have some washed out looking spots or lighter spots. I really like both.
