Silkie thread!

SO, I am very sad tonight... I recieved some silkies eggs from two lovely woman in the egg swap room, and I have had them in the bator for 7 days... i just candled and had to get rid of the whole batch... over half were duds, and the rest had the blood ring... They arrived with detached air cells but I was hoping for at least 1 or 2 to do something!! Very upset... I know most of you show your birds and they are beautiful, I fell in love with the breed and wanted some to add to my small flock as pets for my kids... I don't know if I should even try it again!!

I am so very sorry but I hope you won't give up. I have hatched many batches of shipped eggs and I have had 3 different shipments that didn't hatch a thing. It's part of the price you pay for the ones that do make it. It' like when you fall off a horse you have to get back on. It's really better to find out after 7 days. Most of mine straggled on for 2 weeks or more before quitting. The good news is that I now have a barn full of beautiful, quality silkies. :)

She is just so gorgeous!!! She does look a bit in between porcelain and partridge but I don't see any pencilling. They should make some beautiful babies and you will also get 25% self-blue. :)

Thanks. I love the self-blues too.

That's the same hen that gave me this self-blue chick.
I'm thinking of letting her breed with Micah too.

Thanks Peep!! I am sure I won't give up, just bummed out right now!! If anyone knows of anyone that has some silkies eggs for sale (they don't have to be show quality but I would like em to be pretty!!) please let me know... thanks again, Peep

Quick question....how old is a silkie before she starts laying eggs? And since they don't develope red faces, how do you tell when they are about ready to lay? Thanks. My silkie is about 18 weeks old.

My silkies start laying between 6-8 months and my Silkie Cuckoo does have red wattles and combs which is common for the cuckoo because of the gene it carries.

What a cutie!! Are you seeing any pencilling yet?
I have one that is this light - I call it silver, because that's what it reminds me of, and she/he has gold (?) leakage around the hackles.

Is that blue partridge? :/

A few pages back someone was asking about vaulted skulls. It is really obvious when they hatch before they dry and fluff up. Here are two buffs, one with and one without the vault. Yes, I forgot to take them out of the turner!

Hello everyone! I am about to get some Silkie hatching eggs so I figure I should educate myself. My main questions right now are:

How do you tell boys from girls with all the fluff?
What age do the boys tend to start crowing?
Are there any special considerations that need to be made for Silkie babies? Mine are going under a broody bantam brahma.

Thanks all!

OMG I LOVE your bird!! I am not into showing, I just love the silkies so I have no idea if it is a show quality or not, but I think it looks awesome!!
Oh he is not mine. It is up for sale and the breeder sent me this picture of him. I am going to pass on this one though. She does have nice birds. I am working on picking some up.. How am I going to explain that to my DH. He is already complaining.
