Silkie thread!

Quote: I had a bumble foot issue with one of my EE's. I used a foot soak of Warm water liquid Iodine and Epsome Salts one or twice a day for a couple of days then once every other day for another week or so. I don't know about the salts, but the Iodine soak couldn't hurt. Then I would put something like Neosporin and bandage it up the best you can. I got the bandage tape that is stretchy and sticks to itself and gauze. I put the gauze on first then wrapped it up with the tape that I cut into strips lengthwise so it was thin enough to go between the toes.. Hope that foot gets better! Looks kind of painful. Good luck!

I caught my case of BF early and didn't have to cut or dig out a core of infection. She healed very nicely.

Quote: I built a run with nylon netting to protect from hawks etc and then a cover over that for rain protection. I also have electric wire around the run too to keep out predators. I used 6' 2x4 welded wire fencing then put 3' 1/2in hardware cloth around the base and added a 2' apron of hardware cloth around it too for digging predators.

I have dark blues-- so I don't know how much help my pictures will give you. But I'll post them anyway to give you an idea of my Blues. Maybe others will jump in and post some lighter blues... because mine are all dark. The picture of the 3 chicks isn't the greatest example of blues, because at that age, they are growing in new feathers and appear to be two different colors. Blues should be one solid color.

sounds like you have a plan. I don't have any experience with the LG's... Definitely get new therms, and double check the ones you have. Be careful with that rice and check your RH twice a day if you are putting rice in there. ;)
I have lighter blues :)

On another thread, person with extreme bumble foot used sugar and iodine mixture. Soak sugar with the iodine, then apply to foot and wrap. Leave wrapped for 2 days before changing. She had been dealing with severe bumblefoot and thought she would need to put the bird down. It worked very well for her and others since. Good luck.

What kind of coops do you all have for your Silkies? Do you have a covered run? Not just with predator protection, but also from the rain? And, do you have a solid floor for the run, so their feet don't get soaked in the rain? We want three adult pens and one grow out pen....any suggestions or if you have pics, that would be better. I need something very economical to build. We have the large plastic dog kennels and lots of shingles. Oh, the area will be shaded most of the time. Is that a good idea?
I know this is probably an irritating set of questions, I've searched and looked at so many coops and plans, but want to do what's best for my Silkies.
My Silkie coop has the attached covered run, hardware cloth on the sides plus an apron of hardware cloth all the way around. Mine has just the dirt/grass floor but it doesn't seem to get that wet with the rain so mud has not been a problem. I don't have roosts in the coop since my guys all sleep in the puppy piles, although they love to play on the roosts out in their run (both large rocks and pvc roosts). Their nest boxes are on the floor of the coop, too.

Thank you! I will give this a shot.

It's my opinion that a silkie's run should be covered for rain. They don't know that their feathers don't shed water and will stay in the rain and die. Make everything as big as you can afford. No one ever complains that they made and coop and run too big. I prefer coarse sand in the run but some people are happy with wood chips or pine shavings. Make sure the wire on the run is small enough to keep raccoons from reaching in. Of course snakes can be a problem too.
X2 Hardware cloth is the best! It's what I use. Just buy in bulk and save some money. Orschlens is the cheapest I've found it locally. Lowes carries it, but the farm stores are often cheaper and carry it in larger rolls.

I don't know what to say, but that does NOT look like bumble foot. It looks like that foot is rotting and falling off. I think that bird has an incredible infection going on. I think if you don't get it on antibiotics... maybe penicillian it's going to succumb to the infection. It looks like a couple of toes need to be cut off. I would take that bird to the vet, or put it down. Me... I'd go to the vet. I didn't say anything before because the damage looks necrotizing-- which means unless it is stopped, it's going to keep spreading up the foot and into the leg. But I disagree its bumblefoot. I'm guessing it started when the mites kept eating and infecting the skin and then it picked up a bacteria off the ground, or anywhere and now it's something else entirely.
