Silkie thread!

Help! I have a banty white silkie roo that is 4 months old now. He is sweet and seems pretty healthy. Our problem is that all of the other birds we have pick on him. ALL of them. They are constantly pulling out feathers. I've brought him inside for now and take him out during the day so he can run in the yard but I can't leave him alone with the other birds. Any ideas how to get him better incorporated with the others? or are we going to just have an indoor chicken?

They are growing in feathers all the time, so it's likely just fluff coming out or something. Their mother is moulting right now and this time she is getting darker!

Someone I know builds her coops up off the ground using a piece of 4x8 plywood as the base. She encloses a section for the actual coop...and the rest is a wired run. I really like her coops since you don't have to bend down to the ground to handle the birds or to feed/water/clean.

I'm not sure if that made sense...the coops are almost on stilts... with the plywood as the base of the coop enclosure and run.

I like that idea too...that way their feet stay dry. Have any you used that black teflon (?) stuff? I have it on my RIR's coop and run, but not if it will be ok for Silkies?

Anyone in Maine have some silkie hatching eggs for sale? I have buff, splash, black, and white silkies. I'd like to add different colors to my babies. Thanks.

I don't know what to say, but that does NOT look like bumble foot. It looks like that foot is rotting and falling off. I think that bird has an incredible infection going on. I think if you don't get it on antibiotics... maybe penicillian it's going to succumb to the infection. It looks like a couple of toes need to be cut off. I would take that bird to the vet, or put it down. Me... I'd go to the vet. I didn't say anything before because the damage looks necrotizing-- which means unless it is stopped, it's going to keep spreading up the foot and into the leg. But I disagree its bumblefoot. I'm guessing it started when the mites kept eating and infecting the skin and then it picked up a bacteria off the ground, or anywhere and now it's something else entirely.

The more I look at it, that's what I was worried about. I'll be calling the vet in the morning. I wouldn't want the hen to suffer even if it means putting her down.

We were discussing correct "type" the other day and I wasn't sure if any of my silkies had it. Well, I sat in their pen with them and caught a few of them showing they did have it -I think!

I appreciate, Peepsblessed, Sonoran Silkies and Hawkeye for sharing input and examples.

First is BB, who is 23 weeks old. I'm really hoping it's a girl...no streamers yet.

Next is Mohawk, a 16 week old splash.

Unfortunately, he was re-homed last night because there are a few red feathers coming in on his wings. But, he was hilarious to watch. He kept coming beside me and thrusting his chest out like, "Look Ma, I've got good type"!

And the last photo is of Cinnamuffin my surprise partridge. She is also just 16 weeks old and such a sweety. I'm afraid she'll just be kept for a pet or a broody or a therapy chicken to nursing homes. Peepsblessed pointed out that she may have split wing. Sometimes she holds her wing down and it opens like scissors.

But, she has the best type so far and stands this way for hours....not really, but you know what I mean.

I would say your birds all seem to have very good type overall. Beautiful.

This chickie is LOUD. Squawking away in the hatcher. My kids want to take it out, but it's too early.

Kids insist it has a poofy head. I can't see in there well enough.
