Silkie thread!

I prefer Sevin dust, DE has never worked for me, neither works on eggs. Both can be sprinkled in the dust bath area can aid in their own deterring of mites...DE is supposed to be all natural, BUT inhaled it is just as dangerous as sevin if not more so to the respitory system of birds and humans. DE is tiny shards of sharp silica, and can damage lungs if inhaled. Sevin is a pesticide, and should be used sparringly, best used in the coop mixed in the bedding and sprinkled directly on the bird, or in dust spots...Some use DE as a wormer, or claim it can be used as a wormer, but once its wet it is useless, also I *believe* its been disproven as well....I remember reading up on it when it wasn't working for me. For mites/lice I use sevin in dust spots and coops, and on birds directly I use permethrin or adams flea and tick spray either one is the same thing you use on dogs for flea/tick control and works well on mites/lice. :thumbsup Definitely going to take your advice on this. I have tried DE when I first started for lice/feas and it did nothing. Sevin dust in their big dust bath pool worked.

I find my silkies are dust-bath stupid though. I rarely find them using it. My turkeys spend 90% of their time with the silkies, so they use it regularly. The silkies do love to sit in it though :p

Sherbert is an "Oops bird" that I am trying to re-create. Genetically speaking he is a Splash Partridge, and is about 10 months old now. Titus is a Partridge, he is just at 6 months old, still young and alot of filling in and growing up to to do still.
Sherbert looks very similar in clouring to my Steve, though Sherbert is lighter. just for confirmation, what would Steve be considered in colour? Note that he is finally growing back some feathers after horrible relentless bullying from my barred rock Jagger.

Would anyone care to share your tips and tricks for housing/shelter/runs for silkies in the cold winter months ? I have a partially covered run with access to coop in deep litter pine shavings. Will have heated waterer and lighting but not heat lamps unless necessary. My silkies are just over 2 months old. Thanks all

Well I can help with that one! I do live in Canada, and it does get quite cold here in January/February.

They do not like snow, so adequate space is needed that is snow-free. They don't need heat lamps at all. As long as they stay dry, they handle the weather very well! I would be more concerned with heat.

Your guy is out of buff it looks like, possibly a buff X partridge...something has given him the inhanced red on the wing bows, so it is only speculation....but I would put him more as a buff than anything. Its hard to tell though with a picture and not knowing the birds background at all, but I see no evidence of actual penciling on your guy, though even on Sherb its hard to see his penciling in a picture but in person you can see it.

Sherbert was hatched from eggs that come out of a Partridge X Blue partridge pen, the roo he come out of was a bright flame red/orange...Sherb himself is cream based, with red/orange and darker cream penciling in the hackles, wings, back...also he has splashings and penciling in a light blue (can really see it in his tail, even lighter almost lavender in his under color and wings)
