Silkie thread!

My babies are growing so fast

it seems like the older they get, the sweeter and calmer they are. They let me pet them now without complaint. Sorry about the rough enclosure and dirty feet. It's been pretty much flooding here recently, and after one day of it I had to take them out of their ground pen and quickly fix up this old hutch, safely 3 or 4 feet off the ground. Can't have my sweet babies getting all muddy

Well, I now have three Silkie chicks. The last one (4th egg) had a fully formed chick that ran out of steam while zipping.

. It also had an extra toe growing out of another toe so I figure it probably had more issues than just endurance. Is that a common issue with silkies at all, weird toe growth?

Strange toes is very common in silkies.

The pink skin and beaks makes me think these are not pure silkie. Really cute though. Do they have 10 toes?

It was hard to see without upsetting Summer; I didn't want to push it. But I counted a couple feet and came up with five toes. I will get better pics in the morning. :)

Note for clarity; the dark chicks are the only Silkies. The other three are barnyard mixes.

Love these babies!! :love

Thanks, I love them too :) They're so incredibly friendly and comical. The thing most of them were staring at was my lab, they don't trust him yet lol. I wish I could tell their gender as easily as I can with my wyandotte babies. But I know if I end up with too many roosters, they'll be very easy to rehome :D

This is my handsome boy and I was asked to post better pictures of him. my question to everyone is what do you call his color he is a SIlky Batnam.
Your buff boy is a handsome silkie. Be careful about letting negative feedback get you down. One picture of him is not enough for someone to be too harsh on your birds. What I can see is that he may have nice wings and his back looks short enough. There are a lot of silkies that have bad wings and it is sometimes obvious in pictures. Base on this picture, your boy looks like his wings are set well and held tight to his body. For showing in conformation, you would want to get his head feathers to fill in more. It looks like he is bare in the face, but that could be from conditioning. Keep looking at pictures of other birds and enjoy your silkies. There are "show quality" buffs out there that produce offspring with some smut/dark coloring in their tails and wings. I can't tell for sure if your boy has some dark feathers, but if he does, that isn't something that is rare.
Knowing your birds strengths and weaknesses for showing in showmanship or in the chicken hobby, is a good thing. We all start somewhere and you are at least trying to educate yourself. Good for you!

I feel silly even asking this question. Can I have Blue, Black and Splash birds all together in a breeding pen? Is this considered BBS or is it because the birds could throw Blue, black, and splash chicks? How do you know if a specific hen or roo is from BBS?

. They are beautiful!!.. Silkies are so wonderful...I was looking at
the differance between a roo beak & a hen beek.. Not that it is %100...
However if it really %70 that is still pretty high...
I am going to be sad if our flock ends up with to many Roos..
So anyone, do you think at birth is the time to be able to tell a roo
From a hen? Or around 19 weeks.. ???

I believe it can take several months to begin to determine sex. From what I understand, the better the quality of silkie, the longer it takes. I've been very good at guessing the sex of our young silkies ....which unfortunately is 7 boys and 2 girls. :( A combination of behaviour, beak shape, crown shape, physical stance and movement, crest feathers that sweep back, and the emergence of streamer feathers have all given me really good clues. And of course, catching them in the act of crowing is always a tell tale sign....
