Silkie thread!

PORCELINE ISABELLE What does this mean? Is it a differnt color than white? and what about the difference between lavender and lavender/ black split..?

sorry I have been reading here and planing coop now, to get silkies in the spring as it seems they are not available now..oh one more ? I am ?ing is it true you are safe hatching eggs yourself , to prevent bringing in sickness to other chickens. or do you have to isolate eggs chicks for 2 months?
can you tell i am greenhorn?

Rockerhen what kind of hen is the mother

She is 100% mixed. Her parents were mixed, their parents were mixed, etc. This particular line traces back to my first bantam flock 10 years ago. She's probably mostly old English game bantam with a little Japanese thrown in way back. I have 4 right now, and 3 are in the process are raising chicks. I keep them to hatch my purebred chicks, because I never have much luck with incubators.

I don't know of anyone who isolates chicks hatched from shipped eggs. Here is a photo of Isabelle/Porcelain.

Black/lav split are black birds that carry the lavender (self-blue) gene. It does not show outwardly. Here is a chart for breeding and what you can expect from black/lav split.

The term split is used to indicate a recessive gene that is present, but does
is not seen, because only one copy is present (and two are needed for the gene
to affect the actual appearance).

Lav X Lav = 100% Lav
Lav X Split = 50% Lav, 50% Splits
Split X Split = 50% Splits, 25% Lavs, 25% Blacks
Lav X Black = 100% Splits
Split X Black - 100% Blacks 50% splits, 50% black. But once again, they
are indistinguishable from each other.

Just a reminder, a split lavender is apparent ONLY from breeding
records/information. There is NO evidence in the appearance of the bird that
it carries one copy of lav.

It seems that there are lice and mites popping up all over the country this summer. You are definately not alone...
My opinion on lice, I could totally be off...
( head, dog, and chicken)
It seem to goes in stages.. About 3 summers ago a lot of people "animals" had ticks!
Then last year and a half people head lice, now chicken or fowel,...
It is the same as a virus that can only live in the heat or cold..
It pops up at certain tempetures or time.. Or possibly location on the planet??
Just like when the seasonal flu is going around..
I think I would rather get it in the beginning rather
then later.. It" sometime" manifest it own selfs.... selfs into something
worse later... People use antibiotic to quick, therefore they DO NOT
have immune systems that are as strong as others... So everyone
Keep your eye out for mites... It seems that it is time for them to come
out of the wood works...
Hey I wonder do you think they live in the wood works?
Where do lice go if you irradiate them from your scalp and hair..
So many parents came to me with their children that had lice about 3
years ago. Im a hair stylist... That is why I know...
Weird.. But not for the lice community...
SO where do they live huh.. I will ask SIRI...
Now I am cracking myself up...
Oh and by the way December, January you will seem to loose the most hair..
A lot to think about... Microscopic word is fascinating :/

I went outside and found 4 white silkies and one black 1/3 polish 2/3 silkie had hatched! I read on here that silkies are prone to hatching early, and they did indeed, they were supposed to hatch sunday. One egg is left, but I'm not sure if it's going to hatch or not. Either way, this was a nice way to start my day

. Ahee,
Now I'm thinking we want babies.. Or "I" want...
Just a thought.. At this point... Our girls are only about a month
Plus...old.. However I think that our partridge silkie is a roo..
His neck is longer & he had that boy beek.. Wont know for a bit..
We only want the hens for their eggs.. But after seeing all of these
Momma hens and their babies it is hard to resist wanting to have
them close by...

Time for more pictures!

These are my 9 Catdance chicks, about a week old.

My blue hen Lila LOOOOOVED having the chicks all to herself. We have two white hens that hogged 8 of the chicks but kept picking on the little black one. I swear they're being prejudice because of the color!

Lila adopted the black chick and boy is she being a good mom for a first timer!

It's great to see how mother nature works and how the instincts kick in.
