Silkie thread!

Karen, Catdance Silkies, has beautiful birds and she has started shipping eggs again (stopped when it was hot). Here is her website (http://www.catdancesilkies.com/ )and she is on BYC. Here is a BYC thread for her egg sales (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/664145/18-silkie-eggs-catdance-silkies-includes-shipping ). You will love her birds, just gorgeous!!

Sheila :)
I'm all the way over in Michigan - what are the chances of her eggs making it here and still having a decent hatch? I have never ordered eggs from so far away before.

I live in Connecticut and I have hatched her eggs, she packages them very well you have to let them rest a day before setting in the incubator then I didn't start the turner for the first two days. It isn't the distance so much as the postal handling rough or not that I think is the most damaging and also heat. Check temps from Karen's location to yours before getting them shipped. I had a better hatch when the weather was cooler.

Thanks, I think I will see about getting some eggs next week then. I have five birds left from my first silkie hatch, three hens and two roosters. I would like to keep the three hens, but am having trouble making my mind up about the roosters. I have a very petite lavender and a big beefy splash. The lavender is as small as the hens and does his little rooster dance around me when I sit down in the grass so I am nervous about him becoming aggressive. I have started picking him up whenever he starts doing this. As far as looks, do you think I should keep either of them if I am planning on showing someday, or do they have any faults and I should just wait to get a handsome Catdance rooster? They are both 3 months 10 days old and still have new feather tubes growing into their heads and bodies.

These guys have the cleanest feet I've ever seen!! Nice toe spacing. The lav is shy on foot feathering. They both could use more crest and tail volumn but my biggest objection to them is their long backs. Pictures don't always tell a true story so your observations are important. If they are very young, the back may improve. Wings are a big issue that can't be evaluated in these photos. IMO the roo is so critical in a breeding program as he often has more than one mate and some times several which makes his contribution huge. If you are able to get better ones I would certainly do that. Some times you must do the best you can with what you have.

I feel like my wings are one of the best features of my own. All hold them very tight to their bodies. Even at this young age. I really need to work on cushion and backs.

Here is one of my 14 week olds - her wings are very nice and tight to her body. Sometimes it's just too hard to tell in photos though. Maybe it was too hot out that day.
