Silkie thread!

That is a super pen. Is it full time? I see there is a dog in there.
I was wondering if my silkies got bored and your pen reminded me of that, It looks like they have a toy in there and a pear. Does anyone provide toys for them or anything so they don't get bored?

Thanks Yep, it's full time. The dog in there is my Anatolian Shepherd, Kota. When I'm out in the chicken pens he likes to come join me lol. I try to provide them with some sort of treat every day. The pear trees at my house are dropping fruit like crazy, so thats mainly what they've been getting lately. They love them. I also give them any cricket i find. The cinder block thing you see is eventually going to hold a support beam that i'll put some sort of hangers on to put hanging feeders and waterers.

Are silkies harder to hatch then other breeds?  Or do they take longer?  I have Am. and silkie eggs in the bator at the same time.  am. hatched, but so far no silkies, only one day late so far though.

I don't think so..? I actually have the highest fertility rate among my silkie eggs (except for one girl - she is not making good contact with the roo - butt too fluffy maybe?) but they seem to make it to lockdown better than any other breed I hatch.

Best hatch rate are my sizzle eggs though.

Do not, under any circumstances, buy an incubator!!!!

You will be hooked and spend the rest of your life with your nose pressed to the little window. I've even been known to take an incubator with me on vacation with an adapter so it can be plugged into the cigarette lighter in the car.

So, looks like I'm taking two of my silkies to a fair for the first time.

They're not fantastic birds but I figured what the heck, it's a fair and it'll be a learning experience, so next year when my Catdance chickies are all grown up, I'll know what I'm doing with those guys.

Any good tips for a first time poultry show?
I'll give my birds good baths before the show and make sure they stay clean. I'll check their toenails and make sure they look good, trim if needed. I have the health certificates and all that stuff. Entries were sent, waiting for a letter back from the fair with instructions.
Now, you need to disinfect your little cage when you go to the show, right? Before and after putting & taking your bird out. I've read that most people seem to prefer Oxine. Are there other good disinfectants that I could use?
What about feeding and watering your bird? Do you need to do this yourself? I would imagine that someone at the fairgrounds would do this to avoid all bird owners making a mess? lol
I can't think of any other questions at the moment...

I think in the case of silkies you either take the water out until after the judging or you bring a little pop bottle thingy that screws on top of the bottle and then you turn it over and use a spring to attach to cage, so they can just drink from a small space. Otherwise they could lose their do real quick. (it is kinda like a hamster waterer.

I lost so many hours of sleep watching my first hatch! It is so riveting!

I was thinking I just wanted to use broodies from now on, but I am asking for a bator for Christmas.

You can't predict when a hen will go broody and I might need to hatch when I don't have one, right?

I am in so much trouble.

So if you don't want anything like the above post or to lose sleep....DON'T DO IT!............But I would.
