Silkie thread!

I have a little one who has a splayed leg and i tried the bandaid technique but the poor chick cannot even stand with it. I don't know what else i can do. Do you have any advice to fix it?

Is the leg twisted??? or is it slipping out to the side??? I'd redo the bandaid but make sure it is tight enough to bring the legs to the proper position. The other thing I read which I think could be really helpful is to put your chick in a narrow teacup or cup.... so that there is no room for the legs to move out to the side.... and lastly I'd make sure you have a "grippy" surface for it to walk on.... the rubber spongey shelf liner many use in their incubators is great! Good luck ...

On a number of occassions I've have pullets go broody before or as soon as they start laying (silkies) I've had brahma and brahma mix cockerels who have taken over babysitting smaller younger chicks on two occassions now. Right now I have a 3 month old brahma mix cockerel who is the guardian of 7 silkie chicks that are all a month or younger, he lets them all crowd with him and tries to cover as many as he can at night, and even gives the boy call for food, etc...
That's a good sign in a roo I think! My roo Steve is always in the grow out pen. He loves chicks, and does the same thing you are describing.

This is where he was very ratty from bullying. Chick pecked him in the butt.

"You didn't just peck me in the butt...?" :gig

Loving the rooster and chick photos! On a similarly silly note, does anyone on here put sweaters on their silkies? My bantam cochins seem okay but I am a little worried about our silkies faring the Michigan winter. Okay, so they will probably be fine since they have an insulated coop, but I just need an excuse... I make recycled woolies pants for babies and toddlers that I sell on Etsy, so I figured making a chicken sweater should be a breeze once I get the fit right and I have 300-400 wool sweaters on hand. Anyone have photos of their sweatered silkies or know of a pattern I can start with? I was thinking I could do something with the sleeves and use the ribbed portion like a turtleneck?

thank you. The website is great, but it's easier to read than actually apply it lol. I have pee pee pads in the brooder and her legs goes forward when she stands. When she walks her legs goes to the left. It's like she has a huge legs, but when i checked it is the same length than the other. She is definitely not very active.... i force it to drink but she doesn't want it much. I hope she makes it!

I've had a hard time with hobbles on silkies. Their legs are so tiny and short compared to other breeds.. I have one right now with splayed leg, but it's not as bad as my first. The first chick I had with it (silkie) it was really bad, and she rested on her hocks on top of being splayed. She couldn't move enough to get to food and water even without the hobbles, and she died overnight :( The one I have right now is eating and drinking fine, but is not active like the rest. I wish I had better advice to give! I did have a really successful time with hobbles on an EE chick. He is 4 weeks old now and legs are awesome, but he developed cross beak as well. It's a male by the looks of it, so he will either have to be used for meat - or given away to someone wanting a pet for free. We call him Edward Scissor Beak.

a week later. You can see his beak starting to slip out of line. It's really noticeable now.

How long does it take for oxine to start showing that it's working for a respiratory fungal infection? I have been nebulizing my girl since monday, doing the 3rd treatment right now. I use the recommended dose, 7 drops to 1 gallon water. I made a gallon on monday and have been using the same one. Is that okay? or does the oxine break down after a while? would it be safe to up the dose at all? Has anyone done this?

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask this question, but I was wondering if it was possible for someone to give me a guess, estimation, even a guesstimation on the age of a scruffy, little chicken that found a home with us a couple days ago. I have no clue how old it is and am fairly new to chickens altogether. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the quality of the photos, I took them on my phone and Squeakers is still very shy. Though it has taken to napping in my lap, which is adorkable!

Her head looks so tiny

She has a silkie body and someone elses head hehe. She is adorable though. Hard to say how old she could be if she's a mix I would think because who knows how big she should be. She looks fairly large for a silkie.
