Silkie thread!

I am having a new coop built for my silkies because the skiunks keep trying to burrow under my coop and I constantly have to re rock the one I have now.  I am also putting it in the barn with the concrete floor.  Oregon sure has its list of chicken predators, found one of my neighbors eggs broken open in my field the other day. 

Sounds like a great new plan, They sure can't dig thru concrete.

Pretty sure silkie to cochin is a frizzle silkie. I think they are smooth feathered first generation, then they get the frizzled the next generation bred back to silkie

But someone else can chime in. But pretty surre to get the silkie look in anything you will need to breed the F1 generation back to silkie.

If there is the possiblity of a chicken being animic because of blood-suckers (lice, mites,etc), why would you make sure to give vitimins WITHOUT iron. I would think that a little bit of iron would help sice that's what's recommended for humans. I've seen this bit of advice posted many times, but no reason why chickens can't have a litttle extra iron just for a day or two while sick.

Too much iron is a BAD thing!
I understand too much of anything is bad...but why couldn't you give one dose of the liquid vitimins that have iron to help boost red blood cell production if you think your chicken is anemic because bugs have been feasting on his/her blood?
Too much iron for you is bad too but if you are anemic, your doctor is going to prescribe iron supplements to bring up your red blood cell count because not enough red blood cells is bad for you too.
I'm not trying to start an argument, but to me the common sense thing would be "it can't hurt to try" a dose of iron for the reason I gave. What is so wrong with a chicken having iron. Or would it be better if the chicken at iron rich foods like broccoli and potatoes (or maybe they should not be eating that if iron is deadly - I don't know how iron affects them at all)?

Hi yall,

Just wondering?... Our lil Sophie has recenty been chirping like she has lost her voice. Its hard to explain but it sounds like someone trying to talk but lost their voice. She still can chirp but when she tries to chirp softly its as if nothing is coming out. Know what im trying to say??? I notice she still can breathe through her nostrils and she still has lots of energy and is able to eat and drink on her own. Heres some info to help you out for people who can give me some input. She is about 2-3 weeks old, a silkie bantam, she eats medicated chick starter feed, she has 100% natural wood pine thats cleaned and filtered (read this of the packaging) and her heating lamp. Oh, fresh water daily but at times some of the wood shavings get in her water till I notice it then change her water. Any more questions you may have please feel free to ask. I am concerned for her as she is our house pet. She already is super spoiled and loved by us already. I hate the thought of something happening to her.

I haven't caught up yet so sorry if someone already said this, but it sounds like something is irritating her, I would remove the pine shavings it's not very common but sometime a chicken will have a reaction to them. Also being in the house be careful of anything like perfume, cleaners or any kind of spray, dust from a laundry room dryer. Hope she gets better. Have you thought about getting her a buddy, sad that she's alone they need companions.

yes but they would be smooth sizzle because unless the cochins are frizzle and if be f1 not pure

Hmmm... It just occurred to me that I should be able to keep my *probably* Silkie roo past the point where he will become fertile. Longer if he keeps quiet. What would a blue Silkie x mottled split to Mille Fleur Cochin bantam look like? Or blue Silkie x buff brahma bantam? I don't generally like the idea of crosses but some turn out pretty.

silkieXcochin has nice foot feathers a bit of a top knot and smooth feathers. Probably be some colorful feathers as the bitd gets older. They are good broodies but in my experience the boys are nasty(as far as being oversexxed). No sizzles frizzle or fricklies unless you have a frizzled cochin.

What is the genetic make up of the creamsickles maybe I can think up a name? I sure hope you can find a name that everyone is satisfied with. Are you close to having the number and showing of the variety to get it approved? I think they are the most beautiful color in silkies.
