I'm in Love!!!!

I did come home to more little cuties... one was even still wet when I got here.

I have four little cuties now. =-) The moms are doing great with them.

Here is another one of them

I really would love to meet them in person ... and finally meet you too

I agree, wish you were closer would love to get some chicks from that breeding!

Has anyone had issues with silkies raising other chick breeds? I thought that some people used silkies specifically for that purpose... correct?
I ask because I had slipped three ameraucana eggs under my girls along with their own eggs and they killed one as soon as it hatched and I
managed to save the second one as they were all attacking it. At first I thought it was because they were black, but they hatched a gray silkie and
didn't attack it. So now I have two chicks in the house. Grrrr....
Anyone have any ideas? Aside from racism? lol
I have raised other breeds. No problem....
All of them are beauties, but that pose that Silk is in looks awesome!
You have all been so graciously complimentary!! Can't thank you enough!!!!!

And yeah, after all of my years of animals rescue, I'm well aware of what goes on in factory farms. I don't eat eggs. My husband does, but he gets his from a friend's chickens.

Aggressive towards other males, or aggressive to people, too? While silkies are not a noted aggressive breed, there are always individual personalities that didn't read the book on that. And sometimes it has to do with teenage hormonal surges and/or the way they were raised. Can you give some specific behavior instances?

Thanks for the response! He is agressive with the other chickens mostly but doesn't like to be handled either. He will peck if you try. He is a lot more hateful to my Salmon Fav though I think because she is so sweet and docile.. He will chase her and peck at her and last night he jumped on her and clamped down on her neck. He has drawn blood a few times and is getting on my last nerve. Unfortunately he is very beautiful so I wanted to keep him but he is wearing out his welcome... :(

Exactly how I feel.
I like to know that my eggs are happy eggs and not eggs from hens packed into cages and can barely walk.. The sight is so awful that if I posted a picture, I would get a warning. That's how sad those hens are

Yeah- my reply later down the messages. I don't contribute to factory farming chickens. I rarely eat meat at all. I have a lapband, and meat hurts.

I just got the impression that you were disgusted from the eggs that came from your chickens

No problem. I wasn't being a smartallack. A lot of people don't know about caged chickens- people won't know unless they are told. And yes, if I ate eggs, I would still be kind of grossed out :) Can't help it

I'm still awfully proud when they lay them!

I'll be letting the hatch them when they get fertile. No one gets to eat them

You have silkies sharing a nest? Or a broody silkie in with the general population? I have had very BAD luck and killed chicks in both these scenarios. I will no longer let broodies share a nest, and I either pen the hen separately or take eggs away if the nest is in with the rest of the birds.

Also, how long before hatching did you give them the eggs? That could make a difference.

My two are sharing babies as well (they went broody around the same time).
They're separate from the other silkie hens though.

Question: When would be the best time to let the momma hens and babies stay in the pen with the others?

OR when would be the best time to let the mommas back in the silkie pen, and let the chicks stay alone?

They all went broody together (I have four). One was a week later, but pretty much at the same time. I thought it was strange, but this was their first time
being broody too. Their first time and mine. All the eggs at the same time, all silkie but the three AMs I put in. I didn't realize keeping them together was not a good idea. But why would they only attack the non-silkies?
