I have a question about breeding if anyone can help here. I was wondering how soon after breeding the hens eggs are fertile I am new to this and I saw my roo mount a girl for the first time today. My Colombian silkie roo is with my buff girls and he just started tryin to mount them and I believe this was his first successful try at it, or the first time I have seen him successful. I just need to know when the eggs she lays will be fertile?

Thank you for all the nice comments.
The two pictures I posted yesterday of Maxime were the two last ones because I found him dead this morning!!!!!
I am really upset and sad!!

I loved that rooster, I miss his crowing, it's so quiet now.

Yesterday night when it was time to go back to the coop, he was the only one laying under the bird of paradise (I posted the pic), I thought something was going on because if was very tame and quiet, but didn't think he was going to die during the night.
I don't know if he ate something wrong or had a heart attack... I just hope it won't happen to my girls!

That is just awful!!! Such a gorgeous guy. I have never had something like that happen.

How many hens can a Silkie roo successfully breed together? I put one in with 7 hens..don't know if that is too many?

Thank you.
I am so sad. I already changed my avatar because it's so hard to look at him. What's sadden me even more is people don't understand. My son was crying and told his grandma and his teacher, and they both said it was ok, he will get another roo soon. We were so attached to him and no one get it because it's just a chicken in their eyes. We will miss him very much.

I think any of us here that has ever lost a chicken understands. They aren't just chickens, they are little love bugs that give you as much love as any other pet member of the family. He was a beauty that's for sure. How old was he Poulettes, did you have him all his life?

Hi- would you suggest 2 drops ivermectin for cattle on 6 month old Silkies. They seem too skinny, some just weight a little more than air, and the breastbones stick out some (alot on the Showgirl). They are on gamefeeder, with a touch of scratch. I already got the Ivermectin from the feedstore today. Gonna put it on tonight. I'm kind of afraid I'll open the door to the building and be faced with dead chooks in the AM. - Worried so...2 drops, undiluted? Thanks!

So now I lost my splash roo I have to rethink it all. I have three silkie coop. One BBS, one white and one (soon to be) all black. For the BBS, will it be better to have a blue roo?
It depends on the hen colors. My girls are blue and splash so I like to use blue so I get all three colors.

24 to 48 hours. This is a fun site: http://www2.ca.uky.edu/afspoultry-files/pubs/Anatomy_Female_reproductive.pdf
