The sight of a beautiful Silkie makes my heart glad.Yay for Johnny!!![]()
I'm glad you got them again. They really are awesome birds. Even if they are a little stupid when it comes to free ranging![]()
Hear that Peepblessed? Have to pen the silkies again. We had a hawk attack that was not successful, but the silkies stood around while everyone ducked for cover.![]()
This breed was never developed all those centuries ago to free range. Just like there are different dog and horse breeds developed for different jobs. There are always those breeds that are purely decorative. Westerners turn up their noses at the black skin on a dressed Silkie but the meat is highly regarded in Eastern cuisine. Tastes like chicken.

If I have to cull...And I no doubt will...I plan on processing surplus birds that do not sell.
It costs the same to feed a highly bred pure strain as it does a mutt.
The thing is, there are so many desirable traits in a beautiful Silkie that they are easy to market as pets and broodies. The well bred typ-y Silkies in the sale pens at the show were selling fast. And not cheaply. There is still a strong market for good birds.
Fortunately, my property is set up to accommodate multiple small separate flocks and my Silkies will not be exposed to predators or the elements for any length of time.
They are such a delight. I'm nuts about them.
