Silkie thread!

Yay for Johnny!!
I'm glad you got them again. They really are awesome birds. Even if they are a little stupid when it comes to free ranging

Hear that Peepblessed? Have to pen the silkies again. We had a hawk attack that was not successful, but the silkies stood around while everyone ducked for cover.

The sight of a beautiful Silkie makes my heart glad.
This breed was never developed all those centuries ago to free range. Just like there are different dog and horse breeds developed for different jobs. There are always those breeds that are purely decorative. Westerners turn up their noses at the black skin on a dressed Silkie but the meat is highly regarded in Eastern cuisine. Tastes like chicken.

If I have to cull...And I no doubt will...I plan on processing surplus birds that do not sell.
It costs the same to feed a highly bred pure strain as it does a mutt.
The thing is, there are so many desirable traits in a beautiful Silkie that they are easy to market as pets and broodies. The well bred typ-y Silkies in the sale pens at the show were selling fast. And not cheaply. There is still a strong market for good birds.
Fortunately, my property is set up to accommodate multiple small separate flocks and my Silkies will not be exposed to predators or the elements for any length of time.
They are such a delight. I'm nuts about them.

My niece, Deborah- down from Chicago for a visit. She's greeted my Shasta, my ambassador of the Chicken Division.

She's never held a chicken before! She was afraid it would bite. I wanted to tell her that she had more of a chance of getting her eyeballs pecked out, then shredded with talons and spurs. But, she was scared enough.

Well, I got my new birds from CJ's Silkies. They are STUNNING!!!! I lost one of the porcelains during shipping. Cj was kind enough to immediately reship TWO older porcelains! She knew how much we wanted the porcelains. I got them the following day. (so nice of her!) I just had to share because I am so happy with ALL of the birds. I will be going back for MORE....here are the birds I received from her. I just can't get over how beautiful they are!

he is really beautiful Peeps...congrats...

I have just put my 10 little babies (5 weeks old) out in their little coop for the first night without the heat/light...I put a tarp over the end for a little extra warmth and a lot of shavings inside...

Really cute little coop!
First introduction of my 3 1/2 month old Grey Silkie pair. Just brought home from the Chehalis Winter Brisk show in Washington State. Purchased from Marjorie Best. They are so very dear. They took to FF straight away. They got it all over their faces but are learning to wipe them clean. Their poo went from loose and smelly to firm and not so smelly in a matter of hours. But...Like all little babes...They picked out every single BOSS bit and spit it out in the shavings! Hah! They are learning to nibble on fresh apple and find the water bottle with ACV and Garlic juice too.

The male with little female hiding. He seems to always step between me and her. So cute.

I am in love with these two little sweeties.

Thanks a bunch!!

Wow had a terrible scare, I have had my Jerseys and silkies together.(not in a coop but in the morning when I have them free range) I have two splash hens one the mother and one the daughter, I took one into my porch with her eggs after my only jersey chick to hatched went missing(probably a rat). I noticed the one left with the flock seemed to be molting getting thin. She also possibly had scaley leg mites, but just in case treated everyone. Well the silkie chicks who are in the porch are now going to their new home so I was excited to re-unite mother and daughter but planned to do it after the chicks left tonight. In the meantime got a new coop and it is kind of high off the ground so the last two mornings I have been lifting the silkies out so they can go free range, when I took out my splash hen out the Jersey roo came pounced on her and started to pull out her feathers. Oh my gosh!!!!!

I grabbed her and put her back in the coop, I went to the porch grabbed the other splash hen and figured I would see if I reunite them now if it might destress my poor silkie. Of course my splash hen is calling to her babies ( this is the part that always makes me sad) But I put out some meal worms in hopes to get both of their minds off the horrible day they are having when I did the momma splash hen starts to call her daughter over to come eat. That sure did my heart some good, now I am just hoping for the best. I think if someone would of jumped on me and pulled out my feathers I may of had a heart attack and died. Thanks guys for letting me vent. Yikes, what a day on the farm!!!!!

So for all the shampoo junkies on here (you know who you are

), has anyone ever tried using dog conditioner on their birds after shampooing?
