My understanding is that possum are generally too lazy to kill & eat chickens unless they are very hungry.

My Daughter recently lost several Silkies to opssum. The live where there should be plenty of natural food for them. They have had to move their Silkies to a coop that can be locked up at night.

Maybe the key is to provide catfood for them so they'll leave our chickens alone, like hstlwombat is doing.

An opposum?

Those are nasty, mean creatures. A friend of mine is having problems with opposums killing their chickens. I hope your chickens are locked up safe in a coop....away from your porch visitor.

They are (locked in a coop) I'm not sure he's noticed the chickens yet. I did smell a skunk the other day...

When I was younger, I found one on a college campus. Someone had cut off her (his?) tail. Foolish me picked her up and took her home. She didn't bite, but sure did stink. They release an odor to go with their "dead" act. She stayed with me for awhile, until my landlord discovered her and and I took her to a nature center. Now that I have chickens, not as fond of them It was cute though, in the face (the one on the porch)

I was just kidding about that! I don't leave ANY food outside (that I can help) because it attracts pests of all kinds. I even lock the feed dishes inside the coops....and have double locks on them.

That is what I do also... I am totally paranoid about the silkies lol!
