Photo Shoot with the Silkie!!
All my other chicken friends said it's a roo, but I would love to hear from the experts!!!!
Either Way it's a Sweety

Photo Shoot doesn't always include HAIR...or does it....LOL

My one and Only silkie...I do feel there will be more!!!! I don't get to handle it often,(winter time change I work 7-5) and was shocked at how docile and easily it followed me or my dogs around the house. It was just so calm and cool about everything...I feel like i've missed out in the chicken world by not having one.
I felt the same way when I got my first silkies. It looks like you have a comb developing which at this young age would indicate a boy.
I have my very first broody silkie! I knew something was up with her sounds and antics. She was sitting on the nest a little longer too for a few days in a row.
Got some barn yard mix eggs for her, and now, she is just staying on them. I was so worried. She hadn't eaten is so long, like three days.
I moved her. Where she has no other birds around her. Still she wasn't eating. I set the food right in front of her. Today, I finally got her off of her two eggs, and I have two in the bator for her, but I dipped her beak into the water. She drank a tiny bit, did it again. She just wants to flop right down where she is. Then later, I just went ahead and force fed her a few bites of food. Well, later I checked the feed. I had made sure it was smooth in the dish so I could tell if she ate, she did! Checked the two eggs tonight, they are both fertile! I hope she gets the hang of going for the food and water once in a while.
Interesting thing in the beginning too. I had three eggs under her at first. I wasn't sure if it was going to be too much for her, they are big eggs..so, kept watching. She sat on all of them at first, then on the third day, she started leaving one out. I kept putting it back, but out it would come. It was always still warm. But, I decided to take it in and put it in with the other two. Candled them, the one she kept leaving out, was clear. I can see them knowing later on, but that early on?
Interesting. So, two under her doing well, and two in the bator doing well. I think she will make a good mom. :)
Any suggestions as to what I can do to help her along during this long wait? Thanks!
Broodies are such a riot with all their fun noises and determination. I always put food and water in reach and take them off the nest once a day and hope they potty away from their nest. Some girls will even take this opportunity to dust bathe. They eat very little but they are all different.
So, he is doing well and eating this morning :) :):) I'll be putting him back with the others and giving them all the corid. I'll keep them IN the coop and not let them out and keep the light on for them for a bit of warmth.

Do you guys let them outside when it is 35* out? Is that just too cold for them?
They can handle much colder than that if it's not wet.

Beautiful silkies! My silkie roo and other non silkie chickens are all out in a coop with no netting on the top. we have some hawks now but never had a chicken lost to one. my silkies do fine in very cold weather.

I had a strange little Silkie pop out today...and I figured I would come here to find out what you'd call the coloring. Unfortunately I don't have a camera at this time (hoping to get one for Christmas) but the coloring is easy to describe.

I *thought* she was partridge when she hatched but now I see she's definitely not (googled images of partridge Silkie chicks). She is black all over but has white spots here, there and everywhere.

She came from purebred Silkies but they are all together, not separated by type. Is there a word for this sort of coloring or is she just called a spotted Silkie? lol

And nope, I don't know for sure that she is female I just call it a "her" sometimes and a "he" sometimes and even "it" sometimes, because I just do. :)

I came home about an hr ago, and found my tiny white pullet, Shasta, laying in a weird way on her side and not moving (sun wasn't out, she wasn't laying in the sun). I started to pick her up, and she started moving and stood up, acting normal (but puffed up). Few minutes later, my brother said that one was fighting with her. It was the Showgirl cockerel, trying to mate with her. He's much bigger, but he's only a week older. I brought Shasta (the pullet) into the house and gave her Denegard. Then, I started thinking that maybe he's been doing that all day, and has hurt her. I separated them. I guess morning will tell if she's ok.

well a paint is white with black spots, so sounds like some sort of reverse paint

Yikes! Poor girl, I imagine that Roo is a lot bigger then her. Thank goodness you were there to scoop her up.
The babies already off to a new home? I bet its sad to see them go. But now you can hatch more.

Yes she is fine, ya gotta wonder what gets into them??? The babies are off to their new homes but have a patio full of Jersey chicks (6 to be exact) soon they will be getting too big to keep in the area they are now. Lol, But they are like the amazing growing chicks they grow so much every day it is like wow are these the same chicks that were here yesterday? How is snow doing???

Well it's a sad day

Hachi was just killed by a hawk. I have never had a hawk problem here, but I just looked out the window to see what I thought was toulouse taking a bath in the leaves and then noticed it didn't have lacing on the feathers

I have a black hen that is so sweet, Sometimes you just have favorites,

Is there a way to help your silkies go broody? I have some silkies that have been laying for months and my boys are now old enough that they are breeding my girls and I am collecting the eggs but I want to see what my Colombian will produce with a few of my buff girls. I am wondering how to jump start one or two of them into going broody. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I have never hatched any chicks so I am learning as I go.
