Silkie thread!

Is there a way to help your silkies go broody? I have some silkies that have been laying for months and my boys are now old enough that they are breeding my girls and I am collecting the eggs but I want to see what my Colombian will produce with a few of my buff girls. I am wondering how to jump start one or two of them into going broody.  If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I have never hatched any chicks so I am learning as I go.

hmmmm....probably make an isolacted pen and put a couple of hens in there and a little pile of golf balls in there or if u can get an biddies pick a cage of em next to the cage that should make want some babies good luck!! once them silkies find out how to do it they wont stop!!!!!

Well I breed 2 Roos with silver leakage to the same black hen with no leakage at different times of course to mix as at that time had 2 Roos and only one hen but is it safe to say that chicks from both breeding are carrying the silver based gene and would be great for the paint project?

It's not "either or"  Yes, they carry the genes that make them black, but also carry silver.

Every chicken has multiple genes on multiple chromosomes.  Unless something extremely weird (from a genetics viewpoint) is going on, they have one variation for each gene on its appropriate chromosome.  The specific variations determines the genotype of the bird, and that is more important for future breedings than what kind of breedings the bird came from.

so will this black line always be silver based? Also so when these chicks grow up they would be best to breed to my paints to get them whiter

My one and Only silkie...I do feel there will be more!!!! I don't get to handle it often,(winter time change I work 7-5) and was shocked at how docile and easily it followed me or my dogs around the house. It was just so calm and cool about everything...I feel like i've missed out in the chicken world by not having one.

So ! You do need to get another one so "he" has a playmate. Silkies love to snuggle with other Silkies

So, he is doing well and eating this morning I'll be putting him back with the others and giving them all the corid. I'll keep them IN the coop and not let them out and keep the light on for them for a bit of warmth.



Do you guys let them outside when it is 35* out? Is that just too cold for them?

Happy to hear he is doing well Sheeshshe. My little Tonto is back with the flock today after being inside for 6 days. The rest of the flock was treated also. After today they will all start their Probiotic, Vitamin, and Electrolytes treatment for one week to beef them up and put good stuff back into their gut. Good luck with your flock.

What a great habitat.

I had a strange little Silkie pop out today...and I figured I would come here to find out what you'd call the coloring. Unfortunately I don't have a camera at this time (hoping to get one for Christmas) but the coloring is easy to describe.

I *thought* she was partridge when she hatched but now I see she's definitely not (googled images of partridge Silkie chicks). She is black all over but has white spots here, there and everywhere.

She came from purebred Silkies but they are all together, not separated by type. Is there a word for this sort of coloring or is she just called a spotted Silkie? lol

And nope, I don't know for sure that she is female I just call it a "her" sometimes and a "he" sometimes and even "it" sometimes, because I just do.

Do the white spots have a pattern?

I came home about an hr ago, and found my tiny white pullet, Shasta, laying in a weird way on her side and not moving (sun wasn't out, she wasn't laying in the sun). I started to pick her up, and she started moving and stood up, acting normal (but puffed up). Few minutes later, my brother said that one was fighting with her. It was the Showgirl cockerel, trying to mate with her. He's much bigger, but he's only a week older. I brought Shasta (the pullet) into the house and gave her Denegard. Then, I started thinking that maybe he's been doing that all day, and has hurt her. I separated them. I guess morning will tell if she's ok.

Some people suggest a pile of eggs or egg substitutes.

Hi,
I have a new beautiful Silkie roo and chick that have full beards and crests and can't see much. I don't plan on showing. Is there anything about trimming feathers around their eyes I should know? Is it okay to do?
