So, I'm feeling "stuck." I'm not certain of what caused her wry neck issue but, in my effort to rescue/fix/heal the situation I ended up with an aspiration complication. (Heavy sigh)
I need to ask what is the best/quickest/clean method of putting her down.
I am not looking forward to this procedure at all!
So here's the time line:
~10 -12 days ago discovered her laying head down in crate in the morning (it was a night that went below ~45° and we were still trying to acclimate the flock, that's why the crate).
Wife told me to get ahold of her good friend from this/FB-land (I forgot which initially they met) who has been a great source; so I texted her to start with and logged in here and started a searching....
That morning I brought her inside and layed her in a clear tote with towels to "nest in" & got out the brooder shelf to help keep her warm.
I've been methodically doing the Vitamin-E & Selenium and mooshed fish and oatmeal for the next few days and cradling the head to put her beak in the short cup of water....
Then learned of the French and liquid options so found a syringe and started to do the drops on the side of the beak and let her swollow it.... Taught kiddo's the feeding stuff...
Then I started to drop more water to make sure she was properly hydrated throughout the day.
We had also added several nutritional boosters for her and seemed to see a possible recovery starting.... A few days ago I think I/we may have gotten water down her wind-pipe as at bedtime I heard her gurgling a bit. That's when I did a search in here for that and found the threads on asperation. (Hangs head in embarrassment) Dang it. So the last few days the appitite has started to go down and the last two nights she has been breathing more often with her mouth open.
I wanted to give her every opportunity to recover and survive given that it can be a multi-week recovery at her stage of wry neck. So I set out to go at least 2-3 weeks......
So.... I think that's the most concise story I can give to this dilemma(sp).
/Minor tidbit about me.
I was a S.A.R. swimmer/aircrew in Navy and for the last 10 years worked with special needs folks so - I really don't like to loose a patient --- etal. I suppose I should now go make a "hello" post in the greetings section huh?
